Cromartie to return kickoffs?

Norv Turner plans on Antonio Cromartie returning kickoffs at some point during the regular season. Also, he is making contingency plans on defense. One week after Jamal Williams injured his foot, the Chargers have claimed an experienced defensive lineman off waivers.

  • MVP LaDainian Tomlinson will continue his tradition of not carrying the ball in the preseason. Tomlinson didn't have a summer carry last year, and it seemed to work out all right.
  • Speedy CB Antonio Cromartie is working at returning kickoffs, and coach Norv Turner envisions using him there this season. "We're getting him prepared," Turner said. "You won't see Cromartie in the preseason returning kicks, but at some point in the season, he's getting ready to do it."
  • WR Eric Parker attended his first practice last week since undergoing toe surgery on Aug. 3. Parker will likely miss the first month of the season. "Every day is a day closer to getting back," Parker said. "I'm going to say that what they said was accurate. But I'm trying to get back ASAP."
  • The Chargers dodged a big-time injury when Pro Bowl DT Jamal Williams limped out of the preseason opener. But it was just a sprained foot, and he was able to go against the Rams. It's difficult to overestimate what the massive Williams means to the Chargers' 3-4 defense. "That's the one that we can't replace," OLB Shaun Phillips said. "He's the best in the business."
  • Turner was especially bummed RB Tyronne Gross dislocated his right kneecap in the Rams game. The Chargers like Gross' upside. "Tyronne Gross has worked so hard," Turner said. "He's such a neat kid and a talented player. I was really disappointed to see him get hurt." Gross was on the team's practice squad last season.
  • Stephen Cooper seems to be assuming the role of Randall Godfrey just fine. Cooper is replacing the veteran Godfrey at one inside linebacker spot. Against the Rams, Cooper had 12 tackles in the first half. That alone would have represented a career high if in a regular-season game. Cooper had 11 tackles last year in Seattle.
  • P Mike Scifres seems to be in midseason form. He was sensational in the win over the Rams, averaging 52.3 yards. His shortest punt of 37 yards was downed at the Rams 6.
  • The Chargers signed defensive end Titus Adams off waivers from the New York Giants. To make room for Adams, the Chargers waived undrafted DE Barry Cryer.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "The No. 1 thing I was looking for was that improvement from game one to game two. I believe we did that." –- Turner on the Chargers' improved play in the team's second preseason game.
