REPORT CARD VS. VIKINGS
PASSING OFFENSE: D -- The Chargers never did prove they could handle the Vikings' blitz packages and they had plenty of chances as the Vikings blitzed with regularity. Philip Rivers was sacked but once, but he was harassed most of the game. He ended up completing just 19 of 42 passes for 197 yards, with an interception and a lost fumble. Rivers' rating of 49.4 was right on the mark.
RUSHING OFFENSE: F -- Run blocking was horrible as the Vikings' defensive front had its way with the Chargers' big uglies. That line was missing Pro Bowl C Nick Hardwick, which might have come into play. But there was little room for LaDainian Tomlinson -- 40 yards on 16 carries. Overall, the team had but 42 rushing yards.
PASS DEFENSE: C -- With the way the Vikings were running the ball, there wasn't much of a need to pass. Still, Brian Bollinger was able to complete seven of 10 passes for a touchdown and 95 yards after replacing an injured Tarvaris Jackson.
RUSH DEFENSE: F -- Terrible. Embarrassing. Pick your adjective. This was a disaster as the Vikings' front line blew away the Chargers' front and the linebackers and defensive backs seemed either incapable or uninterested in sticking their nose into the chest of Adrian Peterson. A complete breakdown.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B - Antonio Cromartie's touchdown was one for the ages and a record at 109 yards in returning the failed field goal. P Mike Scifres continues his stellar play as he had a net average of 45 yards on eight attempts. Five of those punts were downed inside the 20. Good stuff too on the return game as Darren Sproles averaged 30.5 yards on kickoffs with a long of 43 and he averaged 14.5 yards on his punt returns. But the kickoff coverage unit got punched for a long of 62; the punt return coverage team allowed a long of 42.
COACHING: F -- Quit is a harsh word. But something isn't right when a defense gives up 189 rushing yards in the fourth quarter. And there were no adjustments to the Vikings running game and nothing to counter the consistent blitzes packages the Chargers offense saw.
