Chargers Report Card Week 7

The Chargers beat the Oakland Raiders 27-21 at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland on Sunday. A total team effort contributed to the victory.

QUATERBACKS- Drew Brees threw the tough passes when it was needed. Brees threw 2 touchdown passes and one rushing. Brees completed 16 of 25 passes for 170 yards and finished the game with a 110.4 quarterback rating. Grade: B+

RUNNING BACKS- LaDainian Tomlinson carried the rock 39 times for 153 yards. He got better as the game wore on and scored the winning touchdown in overtime. LT also caught a TD pass, the first receiving touchdown of his career. It was LT's 3rd 100 yard game of the season and he leads the NFL in rushing through 7 games with 785 yards. Fred McCrary had an excellent day blocking, making key blocks to spring Tomlinson. Grade: A

RECEIVERS- Fantastic job blocking as a unit and big catches by Tim Dwight in overtime as he is continuing to make his mark the last couple of weeks. Reche Caldwell catches his 2nd TD reception in two games. Great route running opens up the play for Caldwell. Grade: B+

OFFENSIVE LINE- The young unit continues to dominate the line of scrimmage. It is not always perfect but a line led by rookies Jason Ball and Toniu Fonoti is getting it done. Fonoti was in on every big play it seemed and the line continues to protect Brees well. Grade: A-

DEFENSIVE LINE- Playing without Pro Bowl end Marcellus Wiley was not as bad as first thought. They sacked Gannon 3 times, although 1 was a coverage sack. Adrian Dingle shines in replacing Wiley and the unit did not have to worry about the threat of a run. The unit could have created more pressure as much as Rich Gannon dropped back. Grade: B

LINEBACKERS- Donnie Edwards is amazing to watch. He snared his 4th interception and was in on every play it seemed. Hard to believe he is a Charger when you watch how much he can contribute. Zeke Moreno again does a formidable job replacing Pro Bowler Junior Seau, and Ben Leber has his weekly big plays. Grade: A-

SECONDARY- Missed tackles were a factor that led to points. Quentin Jammer committed 3 penalties, and Alex Molden committed one, all in crucial points in the game. They kept the ball in front of them for the most part but the unit still needs work. Grade: C

SPECIAL TEAMS- Reche Caldwell was the only plus in the return game with a 38-yard return. Ronney Jenkins still has no rhythm and has been a non-factor all season. Darren Bennett punted well allowing very little in the way of returns on the day. Grade: B

COACHING- The coaching staff did a great job of working without 2 Pro Bowlers on defense. Running the ball when critics said they could not was also a key in wearing out the defense late in the game. Marty Schottenheimer told Cam Cameron to play to win in overtime which was perhaps the best advice to give his offensive coordinator. Grade: A
