Insider Exclusive: Q&A with RB Marcus Thomas

SDBoltReport.com's Michael Kranzler continues his interview with RB Marcus Thomas, this time for Insiders only. Thomas talks about spelling LaDainian Tomlinson, competing with Jacob Hester and doing whatever it takes to "win with the Chargers." Find out what else Thomas has to say in this exclusive Q&A.

Michael Kranzler: You sort of started off slowly at UTEP before really exploding onto the national scene as a senior. What was different in your senior year that allowed you to make such a huge leap in production?

Marcus Thomas: Probably the commitment from the coaches to run the ball like a running back should. Before my senior year, I was averaging 15 or 16 carries per game. Our offensive line was really young, but after my junior year, they got more experience and the whole summer everybody came back and hit the books, learned the playbook and did the off-season weight program. It all worked out.

MK: You didn't time very well in the 40-yard dash. Is a fast 40 time really necessary for you in terms of your running style?

MT: No. A 40 time and a football time are very different. I'm much faster in a football game than in a timed 40. Not all great backs run in the 4.3-4.4 range in the 40, so it doesn't really matter to me.

MK: You are a strong north-south runner who is very physical between the tackles. What sort of role do you think that will allow you to have in the Chargers offense this season?

MT: Hopefully, whenever L.T. needs a break, I can come in and get the defense tired a little bit by running between the tackles. Then we can bring back L.T. and he can do what he does. Hopefully something like that, but we'll see.

MK: With both you and Jacob Hester occupying similar roles this season as rookies, do you think there will be any friendly competition between the two of you?

MT: Not really. Hester is one of my good friends on the team, but we just go out there and compete. Whenever he gets in, he's going to play and do what he's got to do, and when I get in, I'll do what I do.

MK: Is there anything that you want to say to all the Chargers fans out there or that you would want them to know about you?

MT: I'm a hard worker and I'm going to do my best to help this team out in any way. Special teams, backing up L.T., doing whatever. I'm just a hard worker and I'm prepared to win with the Chargers.
