Pre-Game Notes

Every Sunday it seems the Chargers face a team that has a player that was named "Player of the Week" the previous week. Last week it was Julian Peterson of the San Francisco 49ers; this week it is Adewale Ogunleye of the Dolphins.

Miami Dolphins DE Adewale Ogunleye was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in week 11 against Baltimore. Ogunleye had three sacks against Baltimore, which more than doubled Ogunleye's output on the season.

"Coaches were telling me just relax, it's going to come," Ogunleye said. "It was a matter of time before they fell my way, and last week was one of those games."

Reflecting on that, maybe the Chargers should be happy, as the defensive foes are not being named for the award when they play against the Chargers.

Quarterback Drew Brees will be reunited with center Seth McKinney this weekend. The two were teammates in high school in Texas, and they let their school to a state title. McKinney was an offensive tackle on a line that protected Brees, who wasn't highly recruited coming out of high school. Brees spoke very highly of McKinney when he talked to South Florida reporters this week. "He was great," Brees said. "He was awesome. He was my guy." Interesting side note to their relationship, McKinney was ticketed for Texas A&M all the way and Brees was hoping to join him there, but the Aggies didn't recruit. Brees said this week McKinney and his mother did a lot of lobbying on his behalf, but Texas A&M never offered Brees a scholarship, so he instead went to Purdue, where he became an All-American.

Coach Marty Schottenheimer isn't concerned about the Chargers losing their past three to Miami. "We only worry about now," said Schottenheimer, who has a 1-8 mark in Miami. "What has happened in the past is irrelevant to this week."

Defensive end David Bowens took part in practice on Friday and is expected to be able to play on Sunday against the Chargers. If, for some reason, there are last-minute complications, then linebacker Justin Seaverns would take Bowens' place on special teams.

The Miami Dolphins game against the San Diego Chargers this Sunday at Pro Player Stadium has been declared a sellout marking the 37th straight regular season sellout.
