Polk, Thomas Lead List of Cuts

The Chargers announced their final round of roster cuts on Saturday with plenty of surprises on the list. Two-time Special Teams Player of the Year Carlos Polk was caught in a numbers game, as was fifth-round pick Marcus Thomas. The team's final two draft picks, DeJuan Tribble and Corey Clark, made the final 53.

The Chargers released 20 players on Saturday and placed second-year tight end Scott Chandler on the injured-reserve list with a toe injury he sustained during Friday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Only two players with more than a year of accrued experience were released. One was Carlos Polk, whose primary contributions came in covering kicks. The Chargers decided they already had enough players to fill out their special teams, with Tim Dobbins, Brandon Siler and Steve Gregory leading that effort.

The other veteran to be released was kick returner Mark Jones, who was signed as a free agent earlier this offseason. Darren Sproles will maintain his role as the kickoff returner, while Sproles and Buster Davis will both see time returning punts.

Of the young players let go, the biggest surprise was Marcus Thomas. Thomas was the only one of the team's draft picks not to make the active roster. Although he was impressive in spurts during the preseason, the Chargers will lean on a three-headed running back attack of LaDainian Tomlinson, Sproles and Jacob Hester.
