Hot News of Week 13

The progression of player updates through the week is a topsy-turvy business. Players progress or digress depending on how they respond to injury and how the coach sees things. Here is the latest news and progression of the week 11/24-11/30:

Ryan McNeil: CB leaves game with arm injury

Cornerback Ryan McNeil left the game in the first quarter with an arm injury and did not return. He was replaced in the base defense at right cornerback by rookie Quentin Jammer who was replaced in the nickel and dime packages by Davis Sanchez.

Ed Ellis: OT leaves game with ankle injury

Ed Ellis, who started at left tackle for injured starter Damion McIntosh, had to leave the game in the fourth quarter with a sprained ankle and was helped off the field. He was replaced by Kelvin Garmon, who saw his first action with the Chargers in last week's game against San Francisco.

Curtis Conway: WR shoulder limits his action

Wide receiver Curtis Conway was hindered by a sore shoulder from the second quarter on and ended the game without a catch after playing sparingly. He was replaced in the base offensive package by rookie Reche Caldwell.

Ryan McNeil: CB injury is a fracture

Cornerback Ryan McNeil broke his forearm, forcing him to miss the majority of the game on Sunday. The Chargers will be minus McNeil, their Pro Bowl cornerback, when facing the Broncos this Sunday. McNeil, according to team officials, could wear a cast and play the following week against the Raiders.

Tim Dwight: WR has bruised ribs

Wide receiver Tim Dwight will have his bruised ribs examined today. They're not the same ones which sidelined him for six games last year.

Rogers Beckett: Benched

The team disappointed with FS Rogers Beckett's tackling, he was benched Sunday in favor of nine-year pro Keith Lyle. Against the Dolphins in his first start of the year, Lyle had four tackles.

Terrell Fletcher: Misses second consecutive game

RB Terrell Fletcher is hoping to return against the Broncos. He's missed the past two games with an ankle injury.

Damion McIntosh: Might return this week

LT Damion McIntosh could return this week after missing the past two starts with a sprained ankle.

LaDainian Tomlinson: Loses rushing lead

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson entered Sunday's game as the NFL's leading rusher, but he was outclassed by Miami's Ricky Williams. The Dolphins' star rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns while Tomlinson was limited to just 45 yards on 14 carries. It was his lowest output of the season and the third lowest of his career. "I thought eventually I was going to break one and have a good run, but it never did happen," Tomlinson said. "We got behind, had to start throwing the ball, and so I kind of went away from my game plan."

Ryan McNeil: Has surgery on broken forearm

Chargers cornerback Ryan McNeil underwent surgery Monday to install a plate to stabilize the broken right forearm he suffered during Sunday's loss. McNeil, whose eight interceptions last year earned him a trip to his first Pro Bowl, will likely be sidelined for a week or two. Rookie Quentin Jammer will fill his spot in the lineup. "My understanding is that they would like to think that he will have a chance in a couple of weeks to play with a cast," Schottenheimer said. "It all depends on the amount of discomfort that he experiences."

Ed Ellis: OT will miss Denver game

Offensive tackle Ed Ellis will miss Sunday's game with a sprained ankle. He injured the ankle this past week in a loss to Miami. Damion McIntosh, who Ellis replaced in the starting lineup, is expected back at practice on Wednesday and should play this weekend.

Curtis Conway: WR to practice this week

Wide receiver Curtis Conway will practice this week. Conway is having a stellar 2002 campaign, but was limited in his on the field action on Sunday vs. Miami with a shoulder injury. He ended the day with zero catches. Expect him to be back in the lineup at full strength for this weekend's divisional game vs. Denver.

Vaughn Parker: OT no longer under wraps

Offensive tackle Vaughn Parker no longer needs to wrap his surgically repaired left arm and said he expects to play Sunday against Denver. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said Parker's return depends on his "effectiveness" with a brace on the arm.

Reche Caldwell: Might take punt return duty full time

Its possible rookie WR Reche Caldwell could take over the punt return role full time, to ease the load on Tim Dwight.

Quentin Jammer: Preparing for first big start

Rookie Quentin Jammer gets his first ``real'' NFL start Sunday, as he replaces Ryan McNeil (broken arm). Jammer has started two other games, but only because the rival offense went to three wides on the first play, and he was in as a nickel back.

Curtis Conway: Practice time might be limited

WR Curtis Conway has been bothered by a sore shoulder for two weeks now; the team called it a stinger when he left Sunday's game. The injury could hamper his practice time leading to the Broncos game.

Davis Sanchez: Role Increases

CB Davis Sanchez is being elevated to the nickel role with CB Ryan McNeil being down. Sanchez has proved to be inconsistent in the past.

Kelvin Garmon: OG to start

Offensive guard Kelvin Garmon will start for the Chargers this Sunday replacing Bob Hallen. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said the team needs more bulk at that position.

Mike Malano: OG signed to practice squad

Offensive guard Mike Malano was signed to the Chargers practice squad on Wednesday. Larry Ned was released to make room for him.

Ramondo North: WR signed to practice squad

Wide receiver Ramondo North was signed to the Chargers practice squad on Wednesday. He replaces punter Bill Lafleur who was signed by San Francisco.

Ronney Jenkins: Has responded to benching

The benching of KR Ronney Jenkins has worked wonders. Since his return from a one-game respite, he's averaged 26.2 yards on 12 efforts, including a long of 52.

LaDainian Tomlinson: Moving up team charts

RB LaDainian Tomlinson already is tied for fifth on the team's all-time list with 19 career rushing TDs.

Keith Lyle: Safety to keep starting role

Safety Keith Lyle will keep his starting role this week. He took over the role from Rogers Beckett last week.

Rodney Harrison: Safety misses practice

Safety Rodney Harrison missed practice on Wednesday. He has a thigh injury and it is not expected to be serious.

Tim Dwight: WR misses practice

Tim Dwight missed practice on Wednesday still suffering the effects of his bruised ribs. He may not practice at all this week but look for him to play Sunday.

Vaughn Parker: OT out

Offensive tackle Vaughn Parker will miss Sunday's game as he continues to recover from surgery he had two weeks past.

Rodney Harrison: Sore, but will go

SS Rodney Harrison has a sore thigh, groin and knee. But he'll go Sunday.

Damion McIntosh: Practicing will play

LT Damion McIntosh continues to practice and will go on Sunday. He's missed the past three games with a sprained ankle.

Tim Dwight: Will return punts

WR/PR Tim Dwight will return punts, and not rookie Reche Caldwell.

Tim Dwight: WR upgraded

Wide receiver Tim Dwight was upgraded from questionable to probable for this weekend's game against Denver. This is big news after seeing Conway get downgraded. Dwight is recovering from bruised ribs and should be able to go full speed Sunday.

Michael Keathley: OG will play

Michael Keathley will play this Sunday against Denver. His addition to the line gives the Chargers a few extra backups which they have not had in a number of weeks.

Terrell Fletcher: RB upgraded

Running back Terrell Fletcher was upgraded from questionable to probable on Friday. He is expected to return this week after missing the previous two. Fletcher was thought to return last week from an ankle injury but did not progress well enough.

Reche Caldwell: Likely Starter

Wide receiver Reche Caldwell will be the beneficiary of Curtis Conway not playing, if it comes to that. Conway is suffering from lingering pain in his shoulder and muscle spasms.

"I think I'm doing pretty good at this point, but there's still a whole lot I got to learn,'' Caldwell said.

"When I got here, I thought it was going to be easy and I didn't work hard at it," he said. "I didn't go out and practice hard. But I came to the conclusion if I wanted to play a lot, I had to work hard and show the coaches that I wanted to go."

Eric Parker: Expanded Role

Wide receiver Eric Parker will get a lot of time on the field on Sunday with Curtis Conway nursing a shoulder injury. Parker caught his first catch of the season against San Francisco in overtime and will be counted upon heavily if Conway is unable to go.

"He's 1-for-1," Schottenheimer said. "And it's was a pretty big one."

Kelvin Garmon: OG Fined

Offensive guard Kelvin Garmon was fined by the league this week for an unnecessary-roughness penalty against the Dolphins on Sunday. The total of the fine was $5,000. The penalty occurred on the Chargers' second possession of the 3rd quarter.
