Scout.com's Chris Steuber has confirmed the Chargers will have a scout in attendance for Saturday's game between UCLA and Oregon State. This will be at least the third OSU game attended by a Chargers scout this season, as the team also attended the Oregon State-Portland State game and the Oregon State-Arizona contest.
CB Alterraun Verner
Verner has good size, plays physical and is a leader in the secondary. He shows good awareness, backpedals cleanly off the snap and transitions well with receivers. He displays a burst of speed and takes good angles in pursuit. He's strong at the point of attack and shows the willingness to defend against the run. Last year, he led the nation with 18 passes defended.
In addition to Verner, UCLA has another solid senior who scouts will be tracking on Saturday, linebacker Reggie Carter. At 6-foot-0, 240 pounds, Carter is a thumper who plays downhill and possesses outstanding instincts.
Other UCLA seniors to track this weekend are RB Christian Ramirez, FB Ryan Moya, LB Kyle Bosworth and K Kai Forbath. Junior defensive tackle Brian Price (6-foot-2, 300 pounds) is the second-rated prospect on the UCLA roster after S Rahim Moore, who is not eligible for the 2010 draft.
The top prospect on Oregon State's roster is an underclassman, DT Stephen Paea. He's a player who could make sense for the Chargers, given the team's glaring needs on the defensive line.
Here is what Steuber had to say about Paea:
"A former JUCO transfer from Snow JC, the 6-foot-1, 288-pound Paea made an immediate impact last season for the Beavers. He had 41 tackles, 11 for a loss, and five sacks in his first year of action at the Division I level. Born in Tonga where he grew up playing rugby, Paea, who moved to the U.S. at the age of 16, didn't start playing football until his senior year in high school. Being short in stature and relying on his strength and leverage, Paea is still developing his technique and learning to make adjustments. Only a redshirt junior, Paea is an intriguing prospect and one that scouts are excited about."
