Harris didn't celebrate with his trademark back flip, but his excitement was obvious.
"It's a great feeling to be back here," Harris said. "I feel like I'm coming home. The group of guys, the coaches, they're all great and so is the atmosphere."
LB Marques Harris
A.J. Smith was equally lucky Harris didn't hold a grudge after the Chargers chose not to re-sign him this offseason.
"Not at all," said Harris when asked if he held any ill will. "This is a business and those kinds of things happen. It's just the way things work. I went to San Francisco and had hamstring problems. San Diego tried to sign me a couple of weeks ago. There are no hard feelings at all. It's just good to be back."
Although Harris' stint with the 49ers was unsuccessful, it helped prepare him for a smooth return to the Chargers. San Francisco's defensive coordinator, Greg Manusky, was San Diego's linebackers coach from 2002-2006.
It also helps that Harris has experience playing for Ron Rivera from their 10 games together last season. Although Rivera's schemes have continued to evolve, Harris has enough familiarity with the defense to dive in without missing a beat.
"We're blitzing a little more now, but that's about it," said Harris of the differences from last season to this season. "The guys here are focused and feel real comfortable with this system."
Harris is rejoining the team at the right time. For one thing, the Chargers are riding a seven-game winning streak and sitting atop the AFC West. For another, San Diego is embarking on its favorite month of the season -- the Chargers have won 15 straight games in the month of December.
Harris can say he's been a part of every chapter in that winning December story.
"December is when the good teams win," he said. "I don't know why we always start slowly, but that's not important, how you start. What's important is how you finish. It's such a long season and you want to be playing well -- playing your best -- at the end of the year. You see a lot of teams that start 5-0 or 6-0 but can't maintain it. We'd rather be like that down the stretch and make progress every game."
