Browns: Behind Enemy Lines

OBR Publisher Barry McBride gives us his thoughts on the keys for Sunday's Browns Chiefs contest.

BLOCK CODE: Q: Last year in Kansas City the Browns handed it to the Chiefs 41 -34. In that game they were given a heavy dose of unknown running back Jerome Harrison. In that game he ran for 286 yards and scored three times. This year he won't be a surprise to the Chiefs. How has he progressed from that breakout game a season ago?

Barry McBride: Harrison ended the season eclipsing team records on a team that has featured some of the NFL's all-time great running backs. His 561 yards in the last three games shows that he was able to victimize teams other than the Chiefs, but the Browns seemed to spend the off-season frantically searching for alternatives. They dealt Brady Quinn for hard running FB/RB Peyton Hillis, and then dealt three draft picks in order to move up in the draft to grab Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty. While Harrison was stunningly effective when given the opportunity, the Browns organization appeared to be saying that they felt the RB's production was somewhat of a mirage. At the very least, the team seemed committed to installing the now-fashionable running back platoon.

The breakout running back took all this in stride, saying all the right things, even going so far as to tell the media that he liked the two-back system. One has to assume that it's been an irritant to Harrison, but he's keeping any frustration well-hidden.

Despite the deep backfield, Harrison may once again be lining up to get a large number of carries, despite the Browns' efforts. Montario Hardesty went down to injury just seven plays into his NFL career (after missing most of the pre-season), and Peyton Hillis punishes tacklers but also drops the ball. His two fumbles against the Buccaneers were a key factor in the Browns' loss, and put him on the bench at the end of the game.

As a result, it's been hard to see so far if Harrison can continue his momentum from last year. He had fumbling problems in the pre-season, which wound up putting Hillis in a position to carry the ball more frequently, but will now likely find himself again in the spotlight. Harrison has had issues blocking throughout his career, which is one of the reasons it took so long for him to get chances in Cleveland, but appears to have improved this aspect of his game. When given opportunities against the Buccaneers, Harrison generally was ineffective, but did break out for one long run.

The key for the Browns running game against the Chiefs starts up front. The Browns offensive line looked worn down in the 90-plus heat in Tampa last weekend. What was disturbing was that the unsettled right side of the team's line would struggle at times, but the left side featuring Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach also found itself blown backwards against the Bucs at various points. Last year's success was partly due to the team's offensive line getting in sync with its running back and the unit finding a groove. The team still seems to be searching for that groove in 2010.

Q: On Sunday, the fans are going to be treated to a special teams bonanza. There is no disputing the fact at the moment that Josh Cribbs is the best in the NFL. However, rookie return men, Dexter McCluster and Javier Arenas are both very good returners. In fact, McCluster won the weekly AFC Special Teams award for his 94-yard touchdown on Monday Night versus the Chargers. With a new contract in hand, and teams gunning for Cribbs in 2010, how do you think he'll fair on Sunday against the Chiefs?

Barry McBride: Cribbs was oddly silent against the Bucs, fumbling the ball once, and making a questionable decision to bring the ball out seven yards deep in the end zone later in the game. He was unable to create much of anything.

There may be two factors at play. The Browns special teams have been one of the best in the league over the past few years, but was missing some key components last Sunday, such as special teams standout Nick Sorensen. Of greater concern is whether the team's focus on installing Cribbs as part of the team's offense at wide receiver is taking away from his return focus as he expends more energy attempting to establish that part of his game. Cribbs has visibly improved as a receiver in 2010, but is not emerging at the top of the team's depth chart, and his performance against the Buccaneers was discouraging.

As someone who has followed Cribbs' career since he signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State, I don't believe that his work ethic will be impacted by the new contract. Cribbs appears to be the same driven and fearless football player he always has been, but needs to show some results in the return game next Sunday or the questions about the team's approach will him will get louder and louder.

Q: Last week the Browns lost to an average Tampa Bay team on the road. This week it's their home opener. They'll be facing their old head coach, Romeo Crennel, who coaches the Chiefs defense. Does Crennel have the upper hand in game this weekend?

You're being kind, Nick. Let's be blunt: The Browns allowed themselves to lose against a bad Tampa Bay team. It was not an impressive display of football for either squad - the second half was a show of ineffective offense, turnovers, and penalty flags on both sides. Two things doomed the Browns: turnovers and offensive ineffectiveness. The Browns were clearly the better team in the first half, charging out to a 14-3 lead until Delhomme's injury and a horrible interception before halftime basically provided the turning point of the game.

QB Jake Delhomme and RB Peyton Hillis found themselves the center of negative attention afterwards, as Delhomme interceptions and Hillis' fumbles handed the game to Tampa Bay. Delhomme, at least, had an excuse for his poor performance: an ankle injury which him throwing off his back foot most of the day, with the attendant problems one would expect. His offensive line, a strength of the team during their late string of wins a year ago, was beaten much of the day.

While Romeo Crennel is a terrific defensive coordinator, he'll have two challenges to deal with on Sunday. One is that the Browns are playing it very coy with their quarterback situation. Jake Delhomme did not practice again on Thursday, and is walking around in a boot, although he will not confirm or deny that he's dealing with a high ankle sprain. Backup QB Seneca Wallace brings a much different style of play, as he is a lot more mobile, has to seek out openings to throw due to his height, and has a pretty strong arm. Wallace's decisions have, at times, been questionable during the pre-season, but he has the respect of the locker room. Crennel has to prepare for two very different quarterbacks, but it's unlikely to have a real impact on the Chiefs if their front seven can be anywhere near as effective as the Buccaneers.

The other concern that RAC has to have is what the team may do with their "Cyclone" offense. The addition of Wallace gives the Browns even more flexibility regarding what they can do in the backfield. With Wallace and Cribbs, the Browns have two players who can effectively run, receive, and throw the ball in certain situations. The Browns did not display much of the expected Wildcat/Cyclone offense against the Buccaneers, with a Cribbs completion to Wallace being its major success. Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has no reason the hold back: if the Browns lose on Sunday, they then face a major stretch of difficult games and could conceivably have their season (and head coach) vanish before their eyes a few weeks from now.
