Warpaint Roundtable: Could Top Coaches Leave?

Will the Chiefs lose their top two assistants should the KC Winning continue? Was Matt Cassel's performance against the 49ers a sign of things to come or an aberration.

Are you worried that with the sudden resurgence of our defense, Romeo Crennel will quickly become a sought-after candidate for head coaching jobs?

Nick Athan: From what I'm hearing, he's not likely going to take something like that on. Remember, he had to be lured back into coaching, and if not for his relationship with Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli, I doubt he would be willing to take over a rebuilding project with another team. Plus, he's already earning head coaching dollars in Kansas City. I'd think right now he'd be content.

Conor Crawford: Definitely. There's no doubt the Chiefs' run defense has been absolutely stunning in the first few weeks of the 2010 season, and their pass defense and overall defense has contributed heavily to their undefeated streak.

Crennel may very well be a hot candidate for other teams looking for a defensive coordinator, but I don't see him being a head coach again for the foreseeable future. He may be a hot commodity to revive a defense somewhere else than Kansas City, but until then, Chiefs fans can savor having him lead the defenders through the rest of the season.

Michael Ash: It's a valid concern. I recall hearing interviews with Crennel and Charlie Weis when they first came to Kansas City, and both were asked about their futures as head coaches. Weis basically dismissed the question, but Crennel admitted that being a head coach is always the primary goal.

I don't think there's any chance that Crennel would leave to take a lateral move and run another team's defense, but it's possible a team with an opening at head coach will throw some money at him. There's a school of thought that a coach performs better when he gets a second coaching opportunity, so the fact he didn't succeed in Cleveland won't necessarily be held against him.

But he seems to be in a good situation here with the Chiefs, working with his friends. And he's in his early 60s, which goes against the recent trend of teams targeting younger head coaches. So the odds of him leaving probably aren't likely. Still, it's not impossible either.

Was Cassel's game against the 49ers a sign of progress, or just a fluke?

Nick Athan: It was certainly progress. It's going to take time for this offense to develop into one when we can forget about asking Cassel questions each week. But you can see how he's getting more comfortable from game to game. All he has to do is manage the offense. We've said that so much the first three weeks of the season but it's true. Cassel isn't going to be a top ten quarterback. But he can be good enough to lead this team to ten or eleven wins. But I wouldn't say that the 49ers game was a fluke.

Conor Crawford: Regardless of whether you say it was a fluke or not, Cassel still passed for three touchdowns. There is no way you can take that back, even if the touchdowns came from a spectacular grab from Tony Moeaki or from a pass to Dexter McCluster which very well could have been intercepted and returned for a touchdown.

Cassel showed significant signs of progress, and we'll just have to wait and see if that progresses against the defending AFC Champion Indianapolis Colts on October 10. If Cassel is solid enough to keep the Chiefs competitive against the Colts, then the game against San Francisco will not be a fluke; it would be a sign of things to come.

Michael Ash: Not to be a downer, but I didn't come away from last week's game thinking that Cassel had made any significant progress. He had a nice stat line for a change, which is nice if he's your fantasy quarterback. But his actual performance didn't give me the impression that he's starting to get things figured out.

Cassel made a nice throw to McCluster, but the fact it turned into a touchdown was because of McCluster's great run after the catch. Cassel hit Bowe for a big touchdown, but Bowe was wide open on a trick play. Any NFL quarterback should be able to make that throw. And he threw a third touchdown because Moeaki leaped up to catch a pass that was 3-4 feet over his head.

It's great that guys stepped up and made big plays, but that alone doesn't translate into improvement from Cassel. When he stops being erratic in the first half – overthrowing receivers, throwing behind them, throwing picks – that will be progress. When big plays start to happen because of something Cassel did, not because a receiver made an incredible catch or broke a great run, that will be progress. Those are the kind of things I want to see, not just a nice stat line.

Jamaal Charles, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, and Brandon Carr are all free agents after this season. Brandon Flowers and Dwayne Bowe have one year left on their deals. Do you think Clark Hunt is going to spend enough money to keep all of them here? And when are we going to see the team start locking these guys up with new contracts?

Nick Athan: I don't see any of them getting contract extensions at the moment. With the owners and players doing their best to present the doom of a lockout, no team is going to sign any of there potential free agents to long term deals. Though I've heard some rumblings in regards to Flowers asking for a new contract, it wouldn't be prudent business to lock any one up until they the owners and players settle their business.

Lastly, I think you have to give Hunt a break. He spent $65 million for Berry. He also gave Weis and Crennel roughly $18 million over three years. Not to mention putting up $125 million of his own money to enhance Arrowhead. If he needs to spend the money, he'll do it.

Conor Crawford: I don't mean to be a bearer of bad news, but this all depends on whether the NFL suffers a lockout from its players. Say if the NFL were to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement, I would expect the team to pursue long-term deals to at least Charles, Hali, and Johnson. It would be tough to say that Carr would get a long-term deal, but he very well could be replaced by a rookie or less talented cornerback at a much cheaper price.

The team would be a bunch of fools to just let players like Charles, Hali, and Johnson just walk away. Clark Hunt may very well be so impressed with the outcomes of this season that he would dish out the perfect amount of money in order to keep them all in town.

Michael Ash: Hopefully, deals with those guys are already being worked out. It's understandable if they want to see the whole labor situation cleared up before finalizing any contracts, but we can't ignore that the Jets didn't let that keep them from locking up Darrelle Revis. It also didn't prevent the Broncos from extending Elvis Dumervil's contract or the Packers from doing a new deal with Charles Woodson, just to name a few other deals of note that have gotten done.

I do think Clark Hunt will open the pocket book to keep these guys in Kansas City, but that's mostly based on hope. Due to poor drafting, the Chiefs haven't had many opportunities over the last decade to give big new deals to their own homegrown stars. So Hunt doesn't have much of a prior history in these situations. But until he proves us wrong, I don't think there's any reason to suspect he would make the Chiefs part with good players because of the cost involved in keeping them.

If his health or another head coaching job caused Charlie Weis to leave Kansas City in the next few years, who would be a good replacement? Would Josh McDaniels be a good fit if he gets fired in Denver?

Nick Athan: I think Weis is healthy enough to survive the remaining two plus years of his contract. The good news is that because of health issues it's unlikely he'll get any head coaching offers from any other NFL or collegiate team.

With health issues at hand, Weis will likely stay in Kansas City as an assistant.

Conor Crawford: I've heard plenty of talk throughout the offseason that offensive quality control coach Nick Sirianni is like a "mini Todd Haley" and is primed to be a surprise coach in the league within the near future akin to Jason Garrett in Dallas and Jeremy Bates in Seattle. He could very well be an offensive coordinator, if not in the near future then even by next year if Weis were to leave.

It would be incredibly risky to entrust the offense in a guy who's very inexperienced, but there's plenty of confidence in Sirianni in order for him to succeed. He's a very young guy but has had many within the Chiefs organization raise their eyebrows in a potential higher position in the organization. Sirianni helps formulate the playbook and has already formed a close relationship with the team's quarterbacks, especially Matt Cassel. His relationship with Cassel is key, especially since we all know that Weis has put an emphasis on making Cassel an elite quarterback in 2010.

However, what the team needs to focus on most is keeping Weis around Cassel for as long as possible in order to have their offense start clicking and winning games.

Michael Ash: I agree with Conor, I think Nick Sirianni would probably be the odds on favorite to take over if Weis had to leave for any reason. You can usually see Sirianni on the sideline during games, wearing a headset, usually always near Haley or near Cassel when the offense isn't on the field. It's important for teams to groom young assistant coaches, and they seem to be doing that with Sirianni.

As for Josh McDaniels, I tend to think he'll be around for a while in Denver, if only because the owner might not want to admit he made a mistake. If he fires Mike Shanahan and then, just a few seasons later, fires the guy he hand-picked to replace Shanahan, it's not going to look too good. McDaniels was a very good coordinator, though, and he obviously has a history with Cassel. So he'd certainly be a good candidate if he was available.
