IF THE CHIEFS WIN:
They will extend their record to 10-5 on the season, officially eliminating the Oakland Raiders from the AFC West race in the process.
A win will also put the 2010 Chiefs in the record books for the largest one-year turnaround in franchise history. Twice in their past – from 1961 to 1962 and from 2002 to 2003 – the Chiefs have improved on their previous year's record by adding five additional victories the following season. But by reaching ten wins, they will improve on last year's 4-12 mark by six victories, setting a new team record.
IF THE CHIEFS WIN AND THE CHARGERS LOSE:
San Diego will be eliminated from AFC West contention, making the Chiefs the division champions.
IF THE CHIEFS AND CHARGERS BOTH WIN:
The Chiefs remain one game ahead of San Diego with a game left to play. K.C. will be able to clinch the division the following week with either a win or a Chargers loss.
IF THE CHIEFS LOSE, THE RAIDERS LOSE, AND THE CHARGERS WIN:
The Raiders are eliminated from the division race. The Chiefs will drop to 9-6 and will fall to second place in the AFC West. In order to win the division, they would have to beat the Raiders in Week 17 and hope for the Chargers to lose at Denver.
IF THE CHIEFS LOSE, THE CHARGERS LOSE, AND THE RAIDERS WIN:
The Chargers are eliminated from the division race. They would remain one game behind K.C., meaning that a win in Week 17 would give the Chiefs the division. But San Diego would also be tied at 8-7 with Oakland.
Even if San Diego won their final game, a Raiders win over the Chiefs in Week 17 would leave all three teams with 9-7 records. Since Oakland would have swept both the Chiefs and the Chargers in this scenario, they would win the tiebreakers and the division.
In the unlikely event of a tie in the Raiders/Chiefs game, the Chiefs would finish the season 9-6-1, which San Diego could only beat by getting to 10 wins. But their loss in Week 16 would make a 10-win season impossible.
In other words, no matter the outcome of the game between the Raiders and Chiefs, there would be no way for the Chargers to win the division. Thus, they are out of contention and the winner of the Raiders/Chiefs game would win the AFC West.
IF THE CHIEFS LOSE AND THE RAIDERS AND CHARGERS BOTH WIN:
The Chiefs drop into second place in the division, needing a win and a San Diego loss in Week 17 to win the division. However, if the Chargers lose the following week, and if the Chiefs lose to the Raiders, then Oakland would win the AFC West.
IF THE CHIEFS, RAIDERS, AND CHARGERS ALL LOSE:
The Raiders are eliminated. The Chiefs remain one game ahead of San Diego, giving them a chance to clinch the division in Week 17 with a win or a Chargers loss.
