Inexperience KC's Downfall

KANSAS CITY, MO - We can spend the entire offseason lamenting over the Kansas City Chiefs embarrassing playoff loss at Arrowhead. But at the heart of the matter is the undeniable fact that the team in red set an NFL record by losing it's seventh consecutive playoff game simply based on the organization's lack of overall experience.

At roughly 3:05 central time on Sunday, the offseason began. And thanks to the Baltimore Ravens 30-7 thrashing of the Chiefs in the wild card round of the playoffs, Kansas City is on the clock.

That's because on Monday morning, Charlie Weis will be leaving Kansas City for Gator-ville (and none to soon if you ask me). A few of the Chiefs coaches are going to be cleaning out their lockers. But paramount for the team is to wash away the stench of back-to-back losses.

That means general manager Scott Pioli needs to regain the control of the team he lost during the coaching feud, which tore apart a team that stood 10-5 with an abundance of confidence to make a serious run in the postseason.

Pioli's willingness to appease Weis and let him interview for the Gators job was a big mistake. So was the fact that this brewing situation became public, despite denials by everyone involved. And based on the nature of the horrific losses, Pioli's allegiance to his friend (Weis) instead of his head coach (Haley) could have even greater consequences. Because there was no reason for Weis to remain with the team once he accepted the Florida job.

That caused a rift in this team wider than the Grand Canyon. Anyone who was at Arrowhead the last two Sundays could see that the franchise quarterback, Matt Cassel, hasn't been the same since he was yanked for a series in the Titans game. Want more proof? In those losses, he threw five interceptions, and that's not like Cassel. Not in the least. He deserved better from both Haley and Weis. He didn't get it. But I'll say this. Anyone who blames Cassel for theses losses should reconsider.

On Sunday, the offensive game plan versus the Ravens was similar to the one that we saw against Oakland. The play calling in each game was both uncreative and ineffective. In fact, the approach reminded me of what teams do in preseason games.

And when Weis or Haley decided to start the second half in a five wide receiver formation, instead of giving the ball to Jamaal Charles, it reiterated the clash between the coaches was anything but over. Say what you want about Charles reported injury, you can't tell me it was bad enough that they couldn't ride him the rest of the game.

Then when Kansas City tried a fancy stretch play on fourth and six inches, instead of running up the middle with Charles, it was clear that neither coach had a clue what they were doing.

And as all that was unfolding on the field, I had to ask myself, what happened to the offense that was on a roll prior to the Weis rant two weeks ago on the headset during the Titans game?

It's sad because Cassel was clearly affected by the dissent the last couple of weeks. And anyone who saw his short press conference after the game could read his body language. To me, his even shorter answers, told a different story.

In 2011, something's got to change.

Entering the third quarter, Cassel had a quarterback rating over one hundred. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, that rating had fallen to 31.9. The Chiefs offense never accounted for the blitz and their offensive formations were a dead giveaway as to the intent of the play. The Ravens created turnovers by Cassel and their bone crushing hits caused even more opportunities for lose balls on the field.

However, blame also falls on this loss to the defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. In key third down situations, he couldn't devise a single plan that thwarted the hot hand of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.

It was clear early on in this game that the Ravens couldn't run past the Chiefs. That meant they'd have to pass the ball to defeat the Chiefs. And that's just what their starting quarterback did. To his credit, Flacco found the soft spot in the Chiefs defensive secondary, passing the ball to seven different backs and receivers.

And Kansas City was powerless to stop them, especially tight end Todd Heap, who carved up the Chiefs safeties as if they weren't even on the field.

Even when the Ravens were up 23-7 late in the game they knew the only way to get first downs was to throw the ball. And they did that with precision until running back Ray Rice scored on a 24-yard scamper that ended a 15-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the fourth quarter clock. That made the final score 30-7.

And that capped a two game run for Kansas City, at home no less, that saw the Chiefs gave up 61 points and score just 17 points on offense. That's not a playoff team. That's a team in a state of flux.

Now Pioli has to fix the mess that he's ultimately responsible for. Haley made great strides in 2010 but is he really the man to guide this team long term? If he can't work with offensive coordinators, that's problematic for Pioli. And since he backed Weis over Haley, when this dispute blew up during the Tennessee game, he now has to deal with how fans perceive the General Manager. Because from the outside looking in, it appears he's lost the team. And that's not his makeup. Nor will his ego be trumped by any head coach.

Ultimately, I suspect that Haley will be given another year. And with the news that veteran Head Coach Bill Cowher is going to sit out one more year, then return to coaching, it's easy to assume that Haley has to back up 2011 with better results than what was accomplished in 2010.

And that won't be easy. The schedule next year is extremely difficult for Kansas City. The Chiefs have to travel to New England, Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, New York, plus play their three AFC West counterparts, the Raiders, Broncos and Chargers on the road.

At first glance, with the way the team ended the 2010 season, I can't see how they can match this year's 3-5 road record with that lineup next year. In fact, of those eight road games, will the Chiefs be favored in any of them?

Kansas City missed a golden opportunity to raise the stakes in the AFC West next season by winning their playoff matchup against the Ravens. It could have catapulted them into serious talk as a team to be reckoned with for the conceivable future. Now there is some doubt.

Whatever happens over the next several days is likely going to determine if this team can get past the turmoil of recent weeks and really learn from the failures that came to light when the power struggle raged through the team like a wildfire.

Still, make no mistake about it, the Chiefs made significant progress this season. But there is much work to do. And that means some serious decisions have to be made or Pioli is going to have to be willing to take at least two or three steps backwards to make the Chiefs Super Bowl contenders. That means this team might need to go through a pair of losing seasons, to get back to the place they were at the end of the first half against Tennessee.

Because they won't sneak up on anyone next season.

That means Pioli can't keep status the quo anywhere on this football team. If he does, that five-year plan we heard for over twenty years in Kansas City is going to reign down on the fan base, and they're going to tune out.

Because what was lost the last two weekends was a golden opportunity to market this team for the future and sell hope and season tickets. The pulse after the game in the parking lots was pure disappointment. And the fact that the stadium never had a sellout in 2010 despite winning seven times during the regular season and winning their first division title since 2003 tells me the fan haven't yet bought into the new regime.

But that's why Pioli is the highest paid executive in the NFL. He's going to have to deal with the fraction amongst his players over the coaching chaos and he has to somehow bridge the disconnect within the fan base, despite his teams success this year, that can clearly be seen by the naked eye of empty seats at Arrowhead.

It's a daunting task indeed. One I'm not sure even the ‘Patriot Way' could overcome. But if anyone can do it, then Scott Pioli will find a way. After all, that's his job.
