The back story on Breaston is truly one of hard work and perseverance. And now as he's set to hit the free agent market, some think his resolve will pay off monetarily once he's set free from Arizona.
Though his career numbers our modest over four seasons, seven touchdowns and 2,528 receiving yards, he's going to be hot commodity based on his potential.
Since Boldin was traded to the Baltimore Ravens a year ago, Breaston has been a solid second receiver for the Cardinals. And if there is a hole in the Chiefs offense this season, they don't have a true slot receiver that can excel making the tough catches.
But he's not going to be an easy sign. Rumors suggest that Breaston, would like to be reunited with his former Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley, the New England Patriots appear ready to enter the Breaston sweepstakes. And that alone will drive up his asking price.
And if the Chiefs and New England play possum, the Cardinals may make a strong push to retain Breaston. Add that to the fact that Fitzgerald wants a $100 plus million dollar contract extension.
In Kansas City as good as the Chiefs were in the rushing game in 2010 (1st in NFL), Dwayne Bowe and company couldn't play at a high level game in and game out. As a group they had brilliant moments and Bowe made did make the Pro Bowl. But with a short training camp for Baldwin, he shouldn't be counted on to do much until mid year.
Someday Bowe and Baldwin could very well become one of the best 1-2 tandems in the NFL. But outside of those two the Chiefs have and empty cupboard. The team will release Chris Chambers and the rest of the roster consists of a few nice receivers but no one that can be counted on to make big plays if the prime receivers are covered.
Although the Chiefs may end up overpaying for a slot specialist, Breaston may arguably have the best value of any player in the free agency pool for Kansas City.
Todd Haley has a thing for his former receiver (i.e. Lance Long), Breaston is familiar with Haley's system (important because of shortened offseason), and he is the absolute best player available at a position Scott Pioli would call a "must".
If Steve Breaston is not a Kansas City Chief in 2011, it's only because a bigger name wide out landed in Kansas City such as Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss or Plaxico Burress.
