Chiefs FA Target: Cullen Jenkins

With free agency still in the infancy stages and teams saddled with restrictions to sign players, the Kansas City Chiefs are still lurking in the shadows. As of this morning, they are pursuing many different positions on both sides of the ball. But they appear to be narrowing their search in regards to their defensive line.

There's an old adage that if you want to be the best you better steal from the best. On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs were in a three-team tussle to land Green Bay Packers Linebacker Nick Barnett. But that might not be the only roster purge they attempt to snag away from the Super Bowl Champions.

Warpaint Illustrated has learned that they have their eyes on defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins. The Chiefs have yet to make a splash in free agency and that could change at some point on Wednesday. So adding a talented nose tackle that can sack the quarterback should be one of the teams' highest priorities.

And this possible move could escalate this morning as the Chiefs learned that veteran Nose Tackle Ron Edwards, signed a three-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. So knowing that Edwards wasn't likely to return to the team, the Chiefs are attempting to sign Shaun Smith to a new contract. The Chiefs drafted the very talented Jerrell Powe. But I can't see Defensive Coordinator Romeo Crennel putting the sixth round draft pick in the starting rotation to start the season.

The problem in signing Jenkins is that he's another thirty-something guy that I'm hoping the Chiefs avoid. But like his teammate Barnett, both still have plenty left in the tank.

The Chiefs are also interested in 49ers Nose Tackle Aubrayo Franklin. But he's not a solid pass rusher like Jenkins.

Still any way you flip this coin between either player both are going to be a hot commodity. The Washington Redskins are the favorite to land Jenkins and there is talk he could re-sign with the Packers.

So the Chiefs have to act fast or they're going to lose out altogether on both big tackles.

General Manager Scott Pioli has made it clear that the goal this off-season with a bag of riches at his disposal, must find the right fits for this football team. Though the short-term goal is to defend the teams AFC West Title, adding key veterans is essential to his ideal to build a consistent winner.

So that means carefully selecting players that can make an impact, be steady in the locker room and who are leaders of men. The good thing is that Jenkins fits all those roles for the Packers. And there's nothing in his past that would indicate he would not do the same thing in a Chiefs uniform.

Still as we get to day two of free agency the Chiefs still haven't made a splash and if they're going to compete in the shark infested waters of the AFC West, they better get busy.

So if Pioli can add Jenkins and his soon to be former teammate, that would be a pretty good place to start.
