This move also insures that wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will likely get the franchise tag before free agency begins in the middle of March.
As far as Routt, he's a physical corner than Carr and managed to snag a career high four interceptions last year for the Raiders. He's also solid against the run which will improve the overall ability of the Chiefs defense.
But it's still a risk that the Chiefs didn't make a stronger play for Carr. However, had they done so, the Chiefs of been forced to overpay for Carr, who was seeking a contract north of the one the team gave Brandon Flowers last November.
With the addition of Routt, the Chiefs will pair him with Flower and continue to hope that third year corner, Javier Arenas can improve his cover skills. The team did draft Jalil Brown in the fourth round of the 2011 draft but he never showed any flashes he can elevate his game to one of NFL starter.
That aside, this is a good move by the Chiefs and one that sets the table for what we've been told would occur this offseason, the team will spend dollars to grab a player in the prime of his NFL career.
