The Chiefs signed him to a five-year, $16 million contract four years ago.
By cutting a player overtaken by Jovan Belcher on the depth chart, the Chiefs gain $1.7 million against the salary cap.
The 6-foot-1, 232-pounder started 22 games and played in 60 over the past four seasons.
He recorded 237 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, five pass deflections and three quarterback pressures. Williams also registered 33 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on special teams.
Prior to joining the Chiefs, Williams spent four seasons in Atlanta with the Falcons.
His career numbers include 124 games played (65 starts) with 594 tackles, 7 1/2 sacks, five interceptions, 13 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Williams has 54 special teams tackles and two blocked kicks.
He played collegiately at Nebraska.
