But as the Chiefs begin to unravel their new offense, Sir Charles is going to need some help. He can't do it alone. And much like they tried to do a year ago by adding Peyton Hillis, the Chiefs should sign former New York Giants Running Back, Ahmad Bradshaw.
At 27 years old, he's solid insurance for the Chiefs. Though he views himself as a starter, injuries (most notably his foot) will keep NFL teams from overpaying for his services in 2013. He still has some NFL life in his step.
And that makes him a good candidate for the Chiefs. In recent weeks Bradshaw has made the free agent rounds in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. To this point after a pair of physicals, both teams passed on his services.
The Bengals in fact re-signed their back-up Bernard Scott, and the Steelers felt that the timing wasn't right to add Bradshaw to their roster.
With the Chiefs in the midst of their first Mini-Camp, it's clear this offense, with a patchwork offensive line, new quarterback and offensive system, will need as many veteran outlets it can develop for late game management.
We all know Charles is a home run hitter. He can score touchdowns on any given snap. But in short yardage situations, the Chiefs don't have a thumper. Though they have a couple of options in second year men, Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray, KC would be best served to add Bradshaw into their 2013 rushing back mix.
More than likely Kansas City is going to carry four running backs this year and of the three on the roster now, who can carry the rock, only Charles has that late game experience.
On the flip side had Bradshaw been 100% healthy, he'd have signed with someone by now. But with the regular season still five months out and the fact the Chiefs have three backs in the fold already, they could work a healthy Bradshaw into his new role by September.
If the Chiefs are going to win games in the fourth quarter using ball control, it's going to be their rushing attack that gets the job done. Thus with Charles and Bradshaw as their 1-2 punch, I suspect they'll do that more times than not.
