When the Chiefs drafted Florida State Guard, Rodney Hudson, a year ago, there was little doubt he'd open the season under center for KC's much maligned offensive line. But midway through the year, Hudson's season ended.
Now months after surgery and rehab the Chiefs have no choice but to count on Hudson delivering the goods this season. And with rumors suggesting that the team is about to ship off Left Tackle, Branden Albert, to the Miami Dolphins for a second round pick, Hudson suddenly becomes the key cog in Andy Reid's new offensive line.
And that's a pretty big risk.
But the team might not have much of a choice. Kansas City is already facing as many as three new starters on the offensive line (left tackle, right tackle and right guard) and there has to be one stable. It's clear that the Chiefs will draft one of three top tackles next Thursday night with their first pick so one of those issues will be addressed.
But with a new quarterback, a new offensive scheme and uncertainty on that very line, Hudson might get the nod to snap the ball to new Chiefs Quarterback, Alex Smith.
However, there are some worthy centers available in the draft such as Wisconsin Badger, Travis Frederick. He's likely to be the best center to be on the board when the Chiefs open the third day of the NFL Draft. And should the Chiefs do just that by taking Frederick, they could move Hudson to guard.
That would give the Chiefs more depth and honestly more athleticism.
After three days of Mini-Camp the rumblings we're hearing is that Reid wasn't all too thrilled with the performance of the men he had in camp that could comprise his five starters.
Still there is only so much Reid can do in one off-season and giving the starting center spot to Hudson might be his only option to so he can focus on the other four horsemen on his offensive line.
