After all, Sproles who had spent the previous five seasons with division rival San Diego, knew a homecoming with the Chiefs would be something special. But then General Manager, Scott Pioli, wouldn't pony up the cash the Saints were willing to pay to lure Sproles to the Big Easy.
Now Sproles has yet another opportunity to return to Kansas City by agreeing to a contract with the Chiefs at some point next week. Of course it takes two sides to dance in NFL Free Agency.
At hand for the Chiefs, might not be the money it would take to sign Sproles but with All Pro running back, Jamaal Charles, still playing at a high level and Knile Davis firmly planted firmly as his back up, will Sproles take a reduced role to return home?
Granted Sproles is still an outstanding return man so his value would be two-fold for the Chiefs. But there is no question; he has a special gear on offense that could give Kansas City another strong weapon.
The Chiefs have a plethora of needs in free agency and adding a component to one of their strengths might not be one of them. But with the Chiefs likely letting, Dexter McCluster, walk into free agency without a contract offer; making a run for Sproles would be a popular choice among the fan base.
It would also allow the Chiefs to use Sproles in a variety of ways that could shift some of their free agent options. Our spies have indicated that the Chiefs would like to add a pair of free agent wide receivers to their roster.
They've already added Canadian standout, Weston Dressler, to their receiving group and special teams. Though Sproles can line up in the slot, he does most, if not all of his damage, from the running back position.
I'm not sure this would be the right move by the Chiefs but if the money is right, it certainly makes a lot of sense to add Sproles. But will it happen?
At some point on Tuesday, we'll find out.
