Quarterbacks (3) Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Aaron Murray
I know the Chiefs have hyped Tyler Bray but I don’t think they’ll part with Daniel. Though they should because he can’t carry the Chiefs offense for any length of time, cutting Bray makes the most sense. Murray’s upside is far too valuable to cut ties with him now.
Running Backs (4) Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, De’Anthony Thomas, Joe McKnight
Though Cyrus Gray had an impressive training camp and pre-season, his value on special teams aside he doesn’t fit long term in Kansas City. Though I would not be shocked if the Chiefs trade him to another team.
Fullback (1) Anthony Sherman
He’s the best thumper in the NFL and I hope the Chiefs use him more in 2014 than they did last season.
Wide Receiver (7) Dwayne Bowe (Suspended), Junior Hemingway, Donnie Avery, A.J. Jenkins, Kyle Williams, Albert Wilson, Frankie Hammond, Jr. & Free Agent pick-up
I can’t really make a case for any other receivers in this grouping. With Bowe missing the first game due to suspension, Kansas City has to carry seven to open the season. Thus barring a trade or adding a veteran after the cuts (something I think will happen), this is likely your receiver mix in 2014.
This might be the Chiefs biggest concern heading into the regular season. I think it’s possible Kansas City could make a trade, Alex Boone is a possibility, to bolster the offensive line before Monday so I would think some of these guys aren’t safe just yet.
Tight End (3) Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce & Richard Gordon
After watching Demetrius Harris struggle to catch the ball in the post-season he could wind up on the practice squad. He’s a work in progress that isn’t NFL ready yet.
Defensive End (4) Allen Bailey, Jaye Howard, Mike Devito & Mike Catapano
Though Catapano has been dealing with a virus, and missed much of the pre-season, he’s still good enough to make the Chiefs final roster. Though he might be a couple of weeks away from being NFL ready, he’s worth carrying until he can get back on the field.
Linebackers (8) Justin Houston, Frank Zombo, Joe Mays, Nico Johnson, Tamba Hali, Dee Ford, Josh Mauga & Derrick Johnson.
This group may still be evolving. The Chiefs are going to be forced to carry Mays who should be back with the team after the bye week. If they place him on injured reserve now, he’ll be lost for the season. I do expect though KC will add depth in the post cut phase at this position.
Cornerbacks (7) Marcus Cooper, Chris Owens, Phillip Gaines, Ron Parker, Sean Smith, Justin Rogers & veteran corner
Like so many other positions this could be one that gets a new member come opening day. Though I’m good with Cooper and Smith on the outside, someone else has to step up and the pickings leftover have much to prove facing a daunting month of September.
Safeties (4) Eric Berry, Daniel Sorensen, Husain Abdullah & Malcolm Bronson
Though Berry still has to prove to me he can get the job done I do like the way this unit shapes up. Again if a veteran is unloaded from another team don’t be shocked if Bronson is the odd man out.
Special Teams (3) Dustin Colquitt, Cairo Santos & Thomas Gafford
Before Saturday I fully expect the Chiefs to do their best to trade incumbent Ryan Succop in a cost cutting move. Santos has the leg to get the job done.
