S Clint Finley has been promoted from Kansas City's practice squad to the active roster. Finley fills a spot created by Lyle West's foot injury. West, a reserve safety and special teams player who was injured in Denver last week, was placed on injured reserve.
WR LaShaun Ward has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. Ward, who played both receiver and cornerback in his career at Cal, will be activated this week instead of wideout Chris Horn, who has been active on an alternating weeks schedule with veteran Curtis Jackson.
LB Mike Maslowski did some light running again Wednesday but remains very questionable for the Detroit game. Maslowski has missed the last two games with a knee injury. Rookie Kawika Mitchell continues to start at middle linebacker in his place, but his play has been undistinguished.
LB Quinton Caver appears ready to return to action this week after missing the last two games with a back injury. The Chiefs had only four healthy linebackers for the Denver loss, and one of them, Gary Stills, is a converted defensive end.
QB Trent Green's 47 passing attempts without an interception against Denver last week was the longest strike of passes without a pick in Chiefs history.
The Chiefs need to get Detroit down early and then keep a foot on the Lions' neck. Kansas City has let strong first-half momentum slip away on both sides of the ball in the last four weeks during which the Chiefs have lost three games. The offense and defense needs to remain aggressive throughout. There should be interception possibility to be had for the KC defense. There also should be return opportunities for Dante Hall.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH:
Lions WR Az-Zahir Hakim vs. Chiefs CB Dexter McCleon. These two former St. Louis teammates may see a lot of each other. McCleon will put his veteran skills up against Hakim's speed. Detroit protection unit vs. Chiefs pass rush -- Lions are among league leaders in giving up fewest sacks. Chiefs will be looking for ways to rattle Joey Harrington early in his first Arrowhead appearance. Chiefs WR Johnnie Morton vs. Lions CB Dre Bly. Morton would love to have a big game against his long-time former team, but he's been battling the drops lately.
Starting LB Mike Maslowski (questionable, knee) remains truly questionable after not practicing Wednesday. There's a good chance he could miss a third straight game, and rookie Kawika Mitchell has done little in his absence.
LB Monty Beisel, a key member of the Chiefs' kick coverage units, will miss a second straight game with a groin injury.
Reserve LB Quinton Caver (questionable, back) appears ready to return after a two-week absence to provide depth in the LB corps and special teams help. But 21 of KC's 22 starters should be ready to go.
