Day 9: Training Camp Quick Hitters (PM Practice)

It was another intense afternoon practice in River Falls and we have the highs, lows and injuries.

Running back Sam Gado was injured this afternoon, lying on the turf for a long while with what Coach Vermeil called a "neck burner". Gado was hauled off the field in a cart for precautionary reasons but would have been able to walk off on his own. No time-table was given for his return to practice.

The offense ran the 2-minute drill early in camp, quarterback Trent Green completed two straight passes to Dante Hall before lining up the team and drilling a pass into the dirt to stop the clock.

The Chiefs had a lively 11 on 11 scrimmage this afternoon with one highlight being the monster hit guard Brian Waters laid on to linebacker Derrick Johnson. Johnson quickly hopped up from the turf and pranced back to the huddle, but the collision was fierce and Johnson had to have seen stars.

Wide receiver John Booth had a nice catch for a touchdown thrown by Todd Collins as he got behind defender Willie Pile.

In a defensive line pass rush drill, Ryan Sims took a couple of the younger offensive linemen to school as he was unstoppable. Jared Allen and Lionel Dalton also excelled at this drill.

The practices were missing Carlos Hall, Junior Siavii, and John Browning, who watched practice in jerseys and shorts…..their absence is giving a long look to defensive end Khari Long, the rookie from Baylor, who has been impressive. Vermeil said that Siavii still had some swelling in his knee and had a "fusion" in his knee. The head coach added that Siavii would soon be off the "all-rehab" team and back in practice.

An ESPN reporter asked Priest Holmes if Larry Johnson's improved play would give Johnson more carries between the 20 yard lines. Holmes answered that he wasn't sure what the carries distribution would be, but that he intended on scoring 30 TDs this year. Holmes was sharp in this afternoons' scrimmage, peeling off several impressive runs and pass receptions.

Offensive tackle Kevin Sampson has solidified the starting right tackle position, having taken nearly all the snaps with the first team.

Wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe caught a long pass behind cornerback DeWayne Washington. Linebacker Derrick Johnson almost caught up to help in coverage on the play. Johnson has been amazing in pass coverage, covering his responsibilities and often flowing to the ball to assist corners and safeties.

The second team defensive safety tandem of William Bartee and Jerome Woods has dominated the scrimmages versus the second team offense.
