Day 20: Training Camp Quick Hitters (PM Practice)

The Chiefs practice was very physical and spirited tonight as the team worked in full pads and full contact. The emphasis was run, run, run, as the team can work on the passing game indoors if need be, or in shells, but only in a full pads scrimmage can they work hard on the run game, and preventing the run.

Injury Update: Wide Receiver Craphonso Thorpe has what Coach Vermeil described as a "Boo – Boo" on his pinky finger, and Linebacker Derrick Johnson had his foot stepped on earlier and did not participate in practice. Both are expected back tomorrow. Wide Receiver Richard Smith is nursing a groin injury and Wide Receiver Darrel Hill has a rib injury from landing on the football twice in the scrimmage yesterday afternoon.

Running Back Priest Holmes made another spectacular move tonight and faked Linebacker Gary Stills out of his cleats, faking a move inside then when Stills bit; Holmes flashed around the end and took off for a long run.

Quarterback Trent Green completed a nice pass to Tight End Tony Gonzalez down the middle for a touchdown against the first team defense. Linebackers Kris Griffin and Scott Fujita stepped in for Derrick Johnson and Kendrell Bell tonight.

Linebacker Kawika Mitchell got into a verbal skirmish with Defensive Coordinator Gunther Cunningham with barbs traded, and resulting in Mitchell being pulled out of the scrimmage for a series to cool down. Mitchell was replaced on the first team by Boomer Grigsby.

Grigsby made the most of playing with the first team by making a tackle in the middle of the line on his first play.

Cunningham has been very hard on Grigsby in the last few practices, yelling at him tonight about taking on blocks with his shoulder pads saying, "If you are going to do that just go work on special teams and don't waste my time". Grigsby makes progress in every practice, but is getting pushed for the back-up middle linebacker spot by an improving Rich Scanlon. Cunningham then yelled at his whole group, "Too soft, too soft, keep your shoulders out of there, c'mon hit'em in the mouth!!"

Safety William Bartee made a nice interception in the 7 on 7 drill, his second in consecutive days. Bartee also broke up a pass intended for Tony Gonzalez in the end zone thrown accurately by Trent Green.

Wide Receiver Jeris McIntyre made a catch after the ball deflected off of Tight End Kris Wilsons' hands and ran it in for the touchdown.

Defensive End Jimmie Wilkerson beat Tackle Willie Roaf to stop Dante Hall in the backfield on a Wide Receiver reverse. It was only the second play in the entire training camp in River Falls that I have saw Roaf beaten. Jared Allen beat Roaf last week….once.

Defensive End Jared Allen, practicing against the second team offensive line, was routinely out-manning his opponents.

The Chiefs have a special teams walk-through in the morning followed by a full pads practice in the afternoon. Tonight is "Rookie Night", where the rookies have to dress up and sing and dance while taking good-natured barbs from their veteran teammates.
