Edwards and Stoops Lead Chiefs List

It appears that the Kansas City Chiefs have narrowed down their list of head coaching candidates to a pair men one in the college ranks and the other in the professional ranks.

According to another league source with knowledge of the Kansas City Chiefs coaching situation Warpaint Illustrated has confirmed that Kansas City will seek permission from the New York Jets to talk to Head Coach Herman Edwards about the Chiefs opening.

Our source believes that the New York Jets will grant permission for Edwards to talk to the Chiefs about the top coaching seat vacated by Edwards mentor Dick Vermeil. As of this writing, we have confirmed that talks have heated up and news could break with this developing story within the 24 to 48 hours.

Our league source confirmed that provided the interview process goes smoothly between the Chiefs and Edwards, that Kansas City General Manager Carl Peterson will negotiate appropriate compensation with Jets General Manager Terry Bradway to secure the services so Herman Edwards can become the Kansas City Chiefs next head coach.

Bradway was the Chiefs assistant General Manger in Kansas City under Carl Peterson from 1993 to 2000 before joining the New York Jets in 2001. With their strong relationship and history together, it's expected that the two sides will be able to work out draft pick compensation that will be acceptable to both teams.

However, per our league source New York Jets owner Woody Johnson must sign off on the deal. It is believed if the compensation is appropriate that Johnson would consider allowing Edwards to take the Kansas City Chiefs head coaching job in exchange for draft picks.

Scout.com and Warpaint Illustrated have also learned from an NFL league source that current Oklahoma Sooners Head Coach Bob Stoops will interview for the vacant Kansas City Chiefs head coaching position later this week.

The rumblings of Bob Stoops to Kansas City have been around since the end of last year. In recent days, a report that the Sooners coach was in town visiting with Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson over the weekend. But that report was denied by the NFL team and people close to Stoops, who said he never left the state over the weekend.

But the two sides have set up a meeting at an undisclosed location in Kansas City later this week to talk about the Chiefs Head Coaching vacancy, which recently opened up when Dick Vermeil announced his retirement last Saturday evening.

Also opposite some media reports the Kansas City Chiefs have yet to interview former Cleveland Browns Head Coach Butch Davis but that meeting could take place either Tuesday night or sometime on Wednesday.
