Holmes Gone For Now

With the roster deadline set for 3:00 central time on Tuesday, the Chiefs decided to trim the roster a day earlier by releasing 14 players and placing former All-Pro running back Priest Holmes on the PUP list.

With mandatory roster cuts looming on Tuesday afternoon, the Turk cometh a day early at One Arrowhead Drive as the Chiefs cut 14 players led by second year wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe and Kansas Jayhawk product Nick Reid.

The Chiefs also placed safety William Bartee on the PUP list. He along with Priest Holmes can't be eligible to return until the sixth week of the season. Once he's deemed ready to practice then the Chiefs have 21 days to activate either one of them to the active roster.

If the Chiefs fail to do so in that time, then each will eligible to be claimed by another NFL team. It's not known if this is truly the end of the line for Holmes, but it's looking more and more like it with each passing day.

Other players who were released on Monday included, CB Jerald Brown, WR Kyle Brown, DT Arrion Dixon, TE Robert Docherty, G Steve Franklin, G Peter Heyer, WR Darrell Hill, TE Adam Johnson, G Tyler Lenda, WR Scott McCready, CB Justin Perkins, QB Jeff Smoker.

As mentioned, the most notable cut on Monday was Thorpe. Despite adding about 12 pounds of bulk this off-season last years fourth round draft pick just didn't seem to play with much passion. He has talent but he the Chiefs felt Jeff Webb and Chris Hannon have more upside than Thorpe.

The Chiefs still have two more cuts to make to get to their 75-man roster limit.

But that number could increase to three or more if the Chiefs grab one or two players who were released today. One of them could be defensive tackle Alex Guerrero. He was cut by the Seahawks today and the Chiefs tried to reacquire him after they cut him last month.

In other Chiefs news, SI is reporting that Kansas City might be in the Deion Branch sweepstakes. The current and soon to be former New England Patriots wide receiver has been given permission by the team to seek a trade. The AFC East team is asking for a first round draft choice for their unhappy receiver and so far no other NFL team has been willing to make a deal with Branch.

It's very doubtful the Chiefs would part with a first round pick but a second round pick is not out of the question. Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker are entrenched as the team starting wide outs and Dante Hall is the third wide receiver off the bench. After that the Chiefs are relying on two rookies.

If this trade happens, it'll have to get done before Sunday's final roster cuts. That's when the Patriots set their deadline with his agent to try and work out a trade.
