WPI Fantasy League – Draft Special

Earlier this week, a collection of high profile, National All-Stars* from the world of Kansas City Chiefs media coverage gathered together for something we hope will be an entertaining feature during the upcoming season - the first official Warpaint Illustrated fantasy league.

(*Well, that was the plan, at least. Unfortunately, Joe Posnanski was busy writing updates for his blog, and Bob Gretz said something about having to rearrange his sock drawer that evening. Adam Teicher was too busy sticking pins into his Bobby Sippio voodoo doll, and Jason Whitlock – well, he just laughed. Maybe next year, guys!)

Eight members – spanning three popular Chiefs web sites – took part in the 15-round draft. Each week, I'll be here to chronicle the league before we crown the first WPI fantasy league champion.

(I'm thinking the winner will get a homemade title belt made of cardboard and tinfoil, but we haven't really worked that part out yet. Stay tuned.)

Who are the fierce warriors competing for this coveted honor, you ask? Excellent question. Listed by draft order, here are the league's participants, including the site they contribute to and the name of their fantasy team.

- Adam Best of ArrowheadAddict.com (Arrowhead Addicts)

- WPI's Topher Dean (Waste of Space)

- WPI's Darren Carter (Sphinx Domination)

- WPI's Nick Athan (Warpaint Pubs)

- WPI's C.E. Wendler (The Runnamuckers)

- WPI's Pat Clifton (Team Pat Is God)

- Chris Thorman of ArrowheadPride.com (Arrowhead Pride)

- WPI's Michael Ash (We Play To Win The Game)

There's nothing fancy about the scoring setup, and the roster breakdown appears further down below. But this league is all about interaction with our readers, so we'd like to hear your opinions. Who do you think put together the best team? Who made silly reaches, and who came away with some steals? Let your voices be heard over at the WPI forums.

Of course, to answer any of those questions, you'll need to know what happened during the draft. So without further ado, here's the draft results with comments from some of the participants sprinkled in throughout.

Round 1

1. LaDainian Tomlinson - Arrowhead Addicts

2. Adrian Peterson - Waste of Space

3. Brian Westbrook - Sphinx Domination

4. Steven Jackson - Warpaint Pubs

5. Tom Brady - The Runnamuckers

6. Joseph Addai - Team Pat is God

7. Randy Moss - Arrowhead Pride

8. Clinton Portis - We Play To Win The Game

Chris Thorman (Arrowhead Pride): Randy Moss was the only elite player left at #7 when I drafted in the first round and I knew I'd be able to snag one of the top running backs on the quick next pick in the second round.

Round 2

1. Marion Barber - We Play To Win The Game

2. Larry Johnson - Arrowhead Pride

3. Peyton Manning - Team Pat is God

4. Marshawn Lynch - The Runnamuckers

5. Tony Romo - Warpaint Pubs

6. Terrell Owens - Sphinx Domination

7. Frank Gore - Waste of Space

8. Ryan Grant - Arrowhead Addicts

Round 3

1. Reggie Wayne - Arrowhead Addicts

2. Andre Johnson - Waste of Space

3. Larry Fitzgerald - Sphinx Domination

4. Maurice Jones-Drew - Warpaint Pubs

5. Darren McFadden - The Runnamuckers

6. Laurence Maroney - Team Pat is God

7. Drew Brees - Arrowhead Pride

8. Brandon Marshall - We Play To Win The Game

C.E. Wendler (The Runnamuckers): I took McFadden as my second running back simply because he had a great preseason, the Raiders ran the ball well last year, and all signs point to a repeat of that this season.

Michael Ash (We Play To Win The Game): Having back-to-back picks at the tail end of the draft, I grabbed two of the top RBs with my first selections since I knew the pickings would be a lot slimmer at that position by the time I was up again. The second time around, I doubled up again with two top receivers, including the first pick of Round 4.

Round 4

1. Braylon Edwards - We Play To Win The Game

2. Chad Johnson - Arrowhead Pride

3. Jamal Lewis - Team Pat is God

4. Plaxico Burress - The Runnamuckers

5. Marques Colston - Warpaint Pubs

6. Willis McGahee - Sphinx Domination

7. Steve Smith - Waste of Space

8. T.J. Houshmandzadeh - Arrowhead Addicts

Adam Best (Arrowhead Addicts): CHAMPIONSHIP!

Round 5

1. Willie Parker - Arrowhead Addicts

2. Torry Holt - Waste of Space

3. Wes Welker - Sphinx Domination

4. Anquan Boldin - Warpaint Pubs

5. Antonio Gates - The Runnamuckers

6. Roy Williams - Team Pat is God

7. Reggie Bush - Arrowhead Pride

8. Brandon Jacobs - We Play To Win The Game

Michael Ash (We Play To Win The Game): Despite grabbing Portis and Barber with my first two picks, I went back to the RBs here and grabbed Jacobs. I just thought he was too solid to pass on. Also, Portis and Barber have the same bye week, and I didn't notice it until after I'd taken them. I'm an idiot.

Round 6

1. Santonio Holmes - We Play To Win The Game

2. Jason Witten - Arrowhead Pride

3. Greg Jennings - Team Pat is God

4. Ronnie Brown - The Runnamuckers

5. Dwayne Bowe - Warpaint Pubs

6. Carson Palmer - Sphinx Domination

7. Derek Anderson - Waste of Space

8. Earnest Graham - Arrowhead Addicts

Darren Carter (Sphinx Domination): Frankly, I was shocked Palmer was still there. He's not Brady or Manning, but this isn't the NFL where wins and losses count.

Adam Best (Arrowhead Addicts): Despite only starting 10 games last year, Graham was a top 10 fantasy running back. Tampa Bay also has one of the easiest fantasy schedules in the league.

Round 7

1. Calvin Johnson - Arrowhead Addicts

2. Kellen Winslow - Waste of Space

3. Minnesota - Sphinx Domination

4. Ben Roethlisberger - Warpaint Pubs

5. Laveranues Coles - The Runnamuckers

6. Tony Gonzalez - Team Pat is God

7. Donovan McNabb - Arrowhead Pride

8. Jay Cutler - We Play To Win The Game

Adam Best (Arrowhead Addicts): I'm not quite as high on Megatron as some people are, but in round seven I couldn't resist. He's also only my No. 3 WR, and I'm not sure you'll find a better one in the rest of our league.

Darren Carter (Sphinx Domination): I like to get the best defense in the league, but a good defense will allow very few points. They'll also get a bunch of turnovers. The addition of Jared Allen should mean a large number of sacks as well. This defense should be net me at least 15 points a game. I think Minnesota will be the best defense in the league this year, which is why I selected them in the 7th round a full 12 spots (the equivalent of 1 and 1/2 rounds) before the next defense was taken.

C.E. Wendler (The Runnamuckers): Coles was my second wide receiver for a good reason - he's playing with the best quarterback of his life in Brett Favre. If you look at Favre's history, he's made a lot of receivers look pretty good over the years.

Round 8

1. Jeremy Shockey - We Play To Win The Game

2. Marvin Harrison - Arrowhead Pride

3. Roddy White - Team Pat is God

4. Lee Evans - The Runnamuckers

5. Dallas Clark - Warpaint Pubs

6. Heath Miller - Sphinx Domination

7. San Diego - Waste of Space

8. Thomas Jones - Arrowhead Addicts

Chris Thorman (Arrowhead Pride): I drafted mostly, like Mr. Herm Edwards does, on the basis of best player available. As it turned out, for many of my top picks, the best player available was a wide receiver.

Adam Best (Arrowhead Addicts): Remember what Tony Richardson did for Adrian Peterson last year? Or what Brett Favre did for Ryan Grant? Or what Alan Faneca did for the Bus and Fast Willie? Yeah, Jones is going to have a good year. Plus, he's my No. 5 RB, and could make for good trade bait.

Round 9

1. Brett Favre - Arrowhead Addicts

2. Nick Folk - Waste of Space

3. Michael Turner - Sphinx Domination

4. Chicago - Warpaint Pubs

5. LenDale White - The Runnamuckers

6. Julius Jones - Team Pat is God

7. New England - Arrowhead Pride

8. Matt Hasselbeck - We Play To Win The Game

Michael Ash (We Play To Win The Game): I was happy to see a quarterback of Hasselbeck's quality still left on the board. Between him and Jay Cutler, I should have plenty of flexibility at the QB spot, and I can pick a starter based on the better matchup. Although since I also have Brandon Marshall, if Cutler-to-Marshall develops into a high touchdown scoring combo, I'll probably keep with Cutler for the double bonus.

Round 10

1. Edgerrin James - We Play To Win The Game

2. Shayne Graham - Arrowhead Pride

3. Todd Heap - Team Pat is God

4. Kevin Curtis - The Runnamuckers

5. Adam Vinatieri - Warpaint Pubs

6. Jerricho Cotchery - Sphinx Domination

7. Jonathan Stewart - Waste of Space

8. Chris Cooley - Arrowhead Addicts

Adam Best (Arrowhead Addicts): One thing I do in all my fantasy leagues is wait on tight ends. The Antonio Gates of the fantasy world go too early for my liking. If you wait, there is always one good tight end who slips. This time it was Cooley.

Round 11

1. Hines Ward - Arrowhead Addicts

2. Chris Chambers - Waste of Space

3. Selvin Young - Sphinx Domination

4. Marc Bulger - Warpaint Pubs

5. DeAngelo Williams - The Runnamuckers

6. Patrick Crayton - Team Pat is God

7. Matt Forte - Arrowhead Pride

8. Santana Moss - We Play To Win The Game

Round 12

1. Chris Perry - We Play To Win The Game

2. Donald Driver - Arrowhead Pride

3. Rashard Mendenhall - Team Pat is God

4. Dallas - The Runnamuckers

5. Vernon Davis - Warpaint Pubs

6. Rob Bironas - Sphinx Domination

7. Joey Galloway - Waste of Space

8. David Garrard - Arrowhead Addicts

Michael Ash (We Play To Win The Game): Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I thought grabbing a starting RB – one who it doesn't appear will lose a significant amount of his carries to another back – was quite a steal in the 12th round. Despite taking over as the Bengals' starter, Chris Perry was still buried in the draft's suggested player rankings and just seemed to stay out of sight and out of mind. Now if he can just stay healthy.

Round 13

1. Nate Burleson - Arrowhead Addicts

2. Jake Delhomme - Waste of Space

3. Jon Kitna - Sphinx Domination

4. Fred Taylor - Warpaint Pubs

5. Kurt Warner - The Runnamuckers

6. Neil Rackers - Team Pat is God

7. Javon Walker - Arrowhead Pride

8. Pittsburgh - We Play To Win The Game

Adam Best (Arrowhead Addicts): This is my favorite pick. It's not very often you get a No. 1 WR in round 13. With Seattle's lethargic rushing attack and Ben Obomanu, Bobby Engram and Deion Branch all out for significant time, Burleson should shine.

Darren Carter (Sphinx Domination): I took Kitna in the 13th round. He and Carson Palmer have qualities I like: both of their teams will have weak defenses which means they will have to score a lot of points to be competitive. That means they'll throw...ALOT.

Chris Thorman (Arrowhead Pride): I tend to completely ignore kickers and tight ends if I didn't get a top flight player. The statistical differences between the second and third tier guys in those categories is so low that I'd much rather invest my picks in a player that I can trade later.

Round 14

1. Mason Crosby - We Play To Win The Game

2. Owen Daniels - Arrowhead Pride

3. Jacksonville - Team Pat is God

4. Ted Ginn Jr. - The Runnamuckers

5. Bernard Berrian - Warpaint Pubs

6. Ricky Williams - Sphinx Domination

7. Benjamin Watson - Waste of Space

8. Phil Dawson - Arrowhead Addicts

Michael Ash (We Play To Win The Game): I was in need of a kicker and Mason Crosby was just sitting there. So I thought to myself "I think I'll draft Mason Crosby to be my kicker". See, Carl, it wasn't that hard.

Darren Carter (Sphinx Domination): Ricky Williams, the 2002 NFL rushing champion, has had a very productive preseason and is scheduled to start for the Dolphins against the Jets this week.

C.E. Wendler (The Runnamuckers): Ted Ginn, Jr. is a pick I really like toward the end of the draft as the Dolphins figure to be behind a lot. He'll get plenty of touches on offense and in the kicking game.

Round 15

1. Seattle - Arrowhead Addicts

2. New York - Waste of Space

3. Devin Hester - Sphinx Domination

4. Tennessee - Warpaint Pubs

5. Nate Kaeding - The Runnamuckers

6. Donte' Stallworth - Team Pat is God

7. Green Bay - Arrowhead Pride

8. Zach Miller - We Play To Win The Game

Darren Carter (Sphinx Domination): I won't get points for Hester as a return guy, but he'll get a lot of touches on offense. We all know how explosive he is and could end up getting me 6 to 10 points when Terrell Owens, Larry Fitzgerald or Wes Welker are on a bye week.
