Colquitt's Coffin Corner: A Big Win

Getting that first win was huge for us being a young football team. There were a lot of veterans on the team wondering when our first win would come.

You should have seen everybody in the locker room, afterwards, in the showers, everyone stayed a little bit longer. Everyone was in the locker room waiting to go see their family because we haven't felt that in so long. Usually after a game you're out of there, but everyone stuck around. But now we're already talking about what we're going to do to beat Carolina.

A lot of the guys have bought into the message that Herm had been preaching all week. One of his points was quit pointing the finger, quit saying I'm a rookie, we've just been unlucky. Go out there and you make the play, don't wait for the defense or the offense to make the play, just go out individually and make the play.

We had Brandon Flowers step up big, Brandon Carr stepped up big, Derrick Johnson had a breakout game. That first play of the game where Larry Johnson scampered down inside the red zone was huge. That threw the monkey off our backs and it gave Larry incentive to think, "you know what, I have to make it happen," and the same goes for all the rookies.

If I just go out there and do my job, and hit a punt while I'm not expecting coverage to get down there, then I've got to hit a better punt. All those guys said that all week to themselves – I've got to make this work. And you saw, everyone was trying to go out there and make stuff happen, and it did. And it was awesome.

Now we have to have two wins, three wins, we've got to put together wins in a row now. The young guys know what it feels like now, so we've got to make sure we remember what it feels like and go out there and not make mistakes. That's what we did on Sunday, we didn't make a whole of mistakes, but we made Jay Cutler, through completing our assignments on the field, make mistakes.

That was something Denver hadn't been able to adjust to obviously, because they had won all their games. Against Carolina, we have to do the same thing. We've got young players on defense and special teams so we've got to go out there and make sure we don't make mistakes or put ourselves in bad situations. Then we can put them in a place where they'll make mistakes.

This week my charity event kicks off and it's something my wife and I have been involved in since I arrived in Kansas City. I've always enjoyed working with kids and we had an assembly on Tuesday. We had a food drive and they had a lot of kids who earned awards.

It's something I've always been interested in because you remember when you were a little kid and people came to talk to you. So you want these kids to have the same opportunity you did.

When kids are in situations they can't help, we're there to put them in a situation where they're given a campus, they're taken to school wherever they want to go, there's a place where they can sleep, eat, and be with other kids in similar situations. When you create that atmosphere you create an atmosphere that's successful for these kids. Before they didn't have any consistency, so we provide a safe haven for them to be successful in.

See you next week!
