River Falls Recap: 8/17, AM & PM practices

The Chiefs were back in action for two-a-days in River Falls Monday, and WPI's Shawna Carpentier was there to catch it all.

The Chiefs were back to work this morning in River Falls. The team dressed in full pads and played intensely both in position-specific drills and team play.

Wide receiver Jeff Webb was cut and replaced by Ashley Lelie, who dressed and received some reps. He has a lot of studying to do to catch up. No other changes have been made to the roster.

Quarterback Tyler Thigpen did not practice Monday morning, spending time on a bike after taking a couple of hard hits in Saturday's preseason game against Houston. Linebacker Zach Thomas, running back Kolby Smith and offensive guard Tavares Washington joined him.

Tight end Sean Ryan didn't play well Saturday, dropping an important pass, but had a good practice Monday morning. He was aggressive and in the spots he needed to be.

Linebacker Andy Studebaker practiced today after taking a hard fall on Saturday but continuing to play in the game.

Ryan Succop was three out of four on his field goals today, missing a 53-yarder wide to the right. He made 39, 42, and 48-yard field goals.

Safety Bernard Pollard did not come out with the first or second-string defense. Instead, safety Mike Brown took his spot.

Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey and Ron Edwards made up the first-string defensive line. Alex Magee and Alfonso Boone are competing with Jackson and Dorsey. Boone ran a punishment sprint after jumping offsides.

Linebacker Corey Mays continues to exceed expectations and is receiving more reps with the first-string defense. He started during team play.

Cornerback Ricardo Colclough intercepted a Brodie Croyle pass to end practice.

AFTERNOON PRACTICE – 8/17 4:30-6:30 PM

It was an uneventful practice this afternoon in River Falls. Quiet, but beautiful with a temperature of 75 degrees and a 10 mph wind.

General Manager Scott Pioli followed the defensive line around practice for a little while, observing their performance.

Safety Bernard Pollard was back taking reps with the first-string after sitting out of first and second-string reps this morning.

Defensive tackle Tank Tyler went down after being hit in the groin. He took a couple of minutes with a trainer but returned to finish practice.

The special teams unit practiced a kickoff return drill run at quarter to half speed. Head coach Todd Haley said the team wanted to try more players out at kick returner. Running backs Dantrell Savage and Jamaal Charles, wide receiver Rodney Wright and cornerback London Fryar split the reps.

Quarterback Tyler Thigpen spent his second practice working out on the side. He was joined by Zach Thomas, Kolby Smith and Tavares Washington.

Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and quarterback Matt Cassel connected on a nice play. Cassel threw a 15-yard pass to the right sideline and Bowe used quick hands and feet to stay in bounds for the catch. The two celebrated after.

Running back Larry Johnson received a heavy load this evening. He has been swift and light on his feet throughout camp.

Quarterback Brodie Croyle had trouble throwing on the run today, and Haley told him it was something he has to be able to do. Near the end of practice Croyle threw a pretty pass to wide receiver Mark Bradley for a touchdown. Bradley was able to break free after a block from running back Jackie Battle created some space.

Cornerback Maurice Leggett showed up for practice, playing with a lot of enthusiasm and picking off one of Cassel's passes.

Linebacker Mike Vrabel nearly had an interception but could not finish. He was upset at his inability to make the play.

Haley was impressed by wide receiver Terrance Copper's play and told him it was a way to be a starter.

The team finished practice running conditioning sprints the width of the field.
