With a team in need of many upgrades, Kansas City moved back into the third round trading a 2010 4th and 5th round pick to the Houston Texans so they could address their tight end position. It was certainly an area of need for this football team.
At first glance, this move was a little questionable for the Chiefs, especially when you consider the Chiefs still need to walk away from this draft with a starting linebacker and another down the field receiver. They now have two less picks to get that done on Saturday.
But Moeaki is a player that has tremendous upside. He has great speed, good hands and can run precise routes. He's also a polished blocker. In the open field, he's a load to bring down.
Had it not been for a series of injuries during most of his career at Iowa, he might have been selected in the early stages of the second round.
The good news is that Moeaki is a high character guy and this pick happened because of the advanced scouting report Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz gave his friend Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.
If he can stay healthy, one of the most highly recruited players at this position in Iowa history, could indeed be a steal at the end of the third round.
But staying on the field has dogged his career since it began four years ago. However, the Chiefs felt he was worth the risk and gave the Texans two valuable picks.
With the neck injury to Brad Cottam a year ago that cut short his season, the Chiefs only have journeyman Leonard Pope on the roster that can be a productive tight end for this offense. Head Coach Todd Haley was displeased with his tight ends all season long and with the departure of Tony Gonzalez a year ago, a trio of players could not get the job done.
The Chiefs are betting heavily that Moeaki can.
