Chiefs Schedule Analysis - Part 3

We continue examining the 2010 schedule with a look at the games from Week 9 to Week 12. To this point, our predictions have the Chiefs with a record of 3-4. Can they get above .500 during this chunk of the season?

Week 9 - @ Oakland Raiders
The last time the Chiefs traveled to the Black Hole, it marked the beginning of the end of the JaMarcus Russell era in Oakland. The former #1 overall pick was benched during the game, never regained his starting job over the final weeks of the season, and was ultimately released about a month ago.

Unfortunately, the Raiders finally fixing their mistake only serves to make the Chiefs' task more difficult as they attempt to extend their record-setting streak in this series. Kansas City has won every game they've played in Oakland dating all the way back to 2003, and their seven straight victories mark the most consecutive home losses the Raiders have ever suffered to one opponent.

Of course, that streak has to end at some point. And now that the Raiders actually have a competent NFL quarterback in Jason Campbell under center, perhaps this is the year it comes to a close.

It's worth noting, though, that Kansas City went on the road to play a Campbell-led team just last season. Not only did the Chiefs pull out the win, but Campbell – just like the QB he's replacing in Oakland – got benched in the second half of that game.

Ultimately, though, our prediction is based less on the Raiders' quarterback situation and more on the fact that the Chiefs have built up a strong enough streak to give them the benefit of the doubt. To say nothing of the heavy turnover on Oakland's end, these seven-straight wins have come with three different coaches leading the Chiefs and four different quarterbacks leading the K.C. offense.

We won't pick them to lose here until they give us a reason to.
Prediction: Win (4-4)

Week 10 - @ Denver Broncos
With the season-ending beating the Chiefs gave Denver still fresh in most of our minds, it's tempting to predict another road win here. After all, there are valid reasons to suspect that the 2010 version of the Broncos might look a lot like the team that got steamrolled by the Chiefs.

Both Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler missed that game, having been benched by head coach Josh McDaniels. Now both players have been traded away. Kyle Orton threw 3 interceptions against the Chiefs, and now that the Broncos have drafted Tim Tebow, Orton has essentially been told that his days in Denver are numbered.

The last time the Broncos pulled a similar move, drafting Jay Cutler, there was a noticeable decline in the play of incumbent starter Jake Plummer. If the same types of struggles plague Orton this year, Denver's offense could be as mistake-prone as it looked at the end of last season.

In fact, back in 2006, Plummer was eventually benched for Cutler in Week 13 of the season. If Denver gets off to a bad start under Orton, this could be the point of the season when they look to make a change at quarterback.

If the Broncos are struggling on offense, or they end up starting a rookie like Tebow, then perhaps the Chiefs can come home from Denver with another win. Unfortunately, there's a reason that last year's game was the Chiefs' first victory in the Mile High City since 2000: it's not an easy place to play.

Given the Chiefs' struggles at Invesco Field over the last decade, predicting them to win two in a row in Denver just seems like too much.
Prediction: Loss (4-5)

Week 11 – Arizona Cardinals
Over the last year or two, this contest would have been a total mismatch. But the Cardinals – who represented the NFC in the Super Bowl a year and a half ago – have suffered some considerable losses in talent this offseason.

Gone from the defensive side of the ball are linebacker Karlos Dansby and safety Antrel Rolle. The team acquired Joey Porter and Kerry Rhodes to fill those voids, but both new additions – particularly Porter – are older and less talented than the players they're replacing.

Leinart finally gets his chance.

The biggest losses, though, were suffered by the Cardinals' offense, where wide receiver Anquan Boldin was traded to Baltimore and quarterback Kurt Warner decided to retire. Clearly, the loss of Warner will impact the team far greater than any of the other departures, and the Boldin trade means Warner's replacement will have one less weapon to work with.

Arizona signed former Cleveland quarterback Derrick Anderson in free agency, but they appear ready – at least for now – to hand the reigns over to Matt Leinart. The former Heisman trophy winner has spent the last three seasons backing up Warner, and would have continued doing so had Warner not walked away. In other words, his rise to the top of the depth chart was caused by Warner's exit, not by Leinart's own improvement.

Hardly anyone knows what to expect once the former USC star takes control of the offense. Luckily for the Chiefs, one of the few who may have an idea is Todd Haley, who was Leinart's offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008.

Haley should have a good idea what Leinart can and can't do, and what he is and isn't comfortable with. Obviously, that kind of knowledge could prove valuable while designing the defensive gameplan.

The Cardinals have developed a nice running game with Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower, and Larry Fitzgerald remains one of the league's elite receivers, so it's not as if their offense has completely fallen off. But without Warner it's extremely hard to imagine them packing the same punch they've had over the last few years.

If the Chiefs are going to get where they want to be, it's critical that they start winning their home games. Like the earlier game with Jacksonville, this is a situation where the team needs to rise up and show that things at Arrowhead have changed. Prediction: Win (5-5)

Week 12 – @ Seattle Seahawks
This game marks the Chiefs' first trip to Seattle since 2002, the year the Seahawks began playing at Quest Field. Needless to say, not many players on the current roster were there for that one. The lone remaining Chief from that season is Brian Waters.

Thanks in large part to a unique design that helps direct sound towards the field, Seattle's home turf has developed a reputation as one of the toughest places to play in the league. For a team that's largely unfamiliar with those conditions, this won't be an easy road trip.

We can't say how much it will help, but Todd Haley's time in the NFC West certainly gave him experience in preparing for the Seattle crowd. Better yet, during his lone season as a starter in New England, Matt Cassel played a game at Quest Field. So he's also has experience at the venue.

Over the last few years, both the Chiefs and Seahawks have been renting space in the league's basement. Both clubs hope they've improved, no doubt, but whether Seattle takes a step forward this year seems to largely depend on whether or not quarterback Matt Hasselbeck can stay healthy after battling injuries the last few seasons.

With new head coach Pete Carroll taking over the team and leaving USC with a two-year NCAA ban on Bowl Games, we think the Seahawks will start the march back to respectability this season. As for the Chiefs, a road game against an improved team in such a tough atmosphere will be too much to overcome.
Prediction: Loss (5-6)
