But in adding two former head coaches in Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel to the mix, how will Haley react to the pressures of being the least experienced of the bunch while sitting at the head of the table?
With the addition of Crennel and Weis, Haley has shown both comfort and a little arrogance in his job security. Heading up a group with 12 years of head coaching experience (Crennel, Weis, and Gary Gibbs) shows a lot of confidence in his own ability to lead this unit. Haley seems to have had this in his plans for quite some time and knows very well what he's signed on for.
Crennel will be an easy fit on Haley's coaching staff. Haley coveted Crennel from the moment he walked into Arrowhead. Haley has and always will be an offensive guy and he has every intention of staying that way.
"Romeo is going to be in charge of the ultimate defense," Haley said at Crennel's official signing announcement. "That's what this is about...finding good coaches that can take us, or help take us, where we want to go as a team. Which is to be a good team year-in and year-out that plays in big games, to play in bigger games".
How he ultimately bonds with Weis, however, will be interesting to watch develop. Both Weis and Haley have high opinions of themselves when it comes to leading the offensive side of the ball.
"I have a lot of confidence in my abilities in that area," Haley said about teaming with Weis. "But when I had a chance to make Charlie Weis part of this staff, and bring his vast experience and success into the mix... it was very important that I made that move".
So can Haley check his ego at the door and appropriately delegate responsibilities to his coordinators?
Ultimately, he has to.
Haley made this bed and now he has to lie in it. Bringing in such experience to his staff it makes it very easy for Pioli to make a move at the head coaching position if the Chiefs stumble out of the gate.
Haley, though, seems confident in the additions. "If the fit is good and I know that everybody can work together towards the common goal, then we have a chance to succeed".
