Warpaint Roundtable: Offseason Edition VII

Can Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Matt Cassel do something no other quarterback has done since Joe Montana? Will he lead them to a playoff win in 2010?

Why should we be optimistic that Matt Cassel will improve his game in 2010?

Nick Athan: First and foremost, though he may be one tough hombre, offensive coordinator Charlie Weis would not have taken this job had he not believed he could turn Cassel into a version of Tom Brady. Add that with a better offensive line, a speedy receiver in Dexter McCluster and a rookie tight end in Tony Moeaki that can catch the ball, those are all the ingredients Cassel needs to lead the Chiefs in 2010.

And when you add the 1-2 running combination in the backfield of speed merchant Jamaal Charles and steady Thomas Jones, that could be the reason that Cassel gets his chance to prove he can be a franchise playoff caliber quarterback.

I've said many times that I felt he got a raw deal a year ago when he took his lumps on and off the field. But he stood his ground and never wavered in his belief he could get the job done. Now he has more tools and if he fails, it will all fall on his shoulders. But I don't think that's going to be the case.

Conner Crawford: I believe that everyone in any professional sport needs time to prove themselves, and that's at least two to three years. Players need time in any system in order to be successful, and Cassel is a prime example.

Entering a full season with Chris Chambers, he should improve, and let's hope Dwayne Bowe measures up as well. Having players like Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles, and Dexter McCluster will also do wonders. Chiefs fans and members of the media alike (including myself) have gotten fed up with all the losing in the past few seasons, and like all other NFL teams, there's going to be a scapegoat. But we're not going to have a player like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, or a quarterback whom is a surefire Hall of Famer, unless they have time to work at it.

Cassel needs at least this season to prove himself and if he doesn't, he'll be on shaky ground heading into 2011. I won't necessarily say the Chiefs will dump him because he has a hefty contract, the upcoming rookie quarterback draft class doesn't look that deep just yet, and there really isn't much to the current depth chart besides him. Brodie Croyle has shown improvement, but remember that it's Cassel who has won four games as a starter in K.C. and Croyle has yet to win his first.

Michael Ash: When it comes to Cassel, I'd say the single biggest reason for optimism is Charlie Weis. That's not because Weis is going to magically make Cassel more accurate, a better deep passer, or any such thing. It's because Weis is smart enough to design his gameplans around what Cassel can do well, while limiting the things that Cassel isn't so good at.

I would imagine their plan is to hopefully establish a strong running game, while most of the passing routes are no more than 10-15 yards downfield. They'll hope for yards after the catch from guys like McCluster and Chambers, and Charles if he's involved more in the passing game.

Then they'll look to throw downfield with play action. Cassel's overall numbers suggest a quarterback who hasn't been terribly effective throwing intermediate or deep routes, but watching him both last year and his season in New England, he seems to be sharper when those throws come from play-action. Last season's finale against Denver is a good example, as the Chiefs came out throwing play-action passes and moved right down the field.

If having more experience, more time in the system, and better pieces around him can help Cassel improve, then all the better. But the biggest reason for optimism is having Weis run the offense.

Let's say the Chiefs could select any current player in the NFL and bring him to Kansas City to fill a hole on the roster. First, what position would you want to fill most? And what player at that position would you select?

Nick Athan: For me it would have to be defensive end. And I'll take the easy way out on this one. Bring back Jared Allen and match him up with Romeo Crennel. If that were to happen this defense would be a Top Ten defense and a playoff team. I don't think, outside of quarterback, there is a more dominating position in the NFL than someone who can sack a quarterback.

The Chiefs history is filled with such players like Allen, Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith that made careers and millions of dollars because they could get to the quarterback. Allen was the best Kansas City had seen since the aforementioned guys were creating havoc in the 90's.

Conner Crawford: It sure would have been nice to get a player like Vince Wilfork to come and play in Kansas City, but now that he resigned with the Patriots, the Chiefs will have to do with what they've got at nose tackle. Now that the Chiefs are beginning to adapt a Bill Parcells/Bill Belichick style of defense, the nose tackle position is going to be crucial to hold down the defense.

Michael Ash: I'm sure some would object to the idea that the Chiefs currently have a "hole" at the position, but if I can bring any player in the league to Kansas City, I'm taking a quarterback. The only issue I'd have to consider is whether to pick someone like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, or whether I'd want to go after a younger player with more years ahead of him, like a Philip Rivers or perhaps an Aaron Rodgers.

Barring that, I'd say a pass rusher would be the other critical position to find. When it comes to getting after the passer in a 3-4 defense, DeMarcus Ware is about as good as it gets in the league today. He'd certainly be a nice addition.

Are the Chiefs serious about Tyler Palko? Will he make the final roster?

Nick Athan: He'll be the third guy for now. Head Coach Todd Haley loves this kid and thinks he brings something to the team. Not sure what that is at the moment. That's not a knock but he was playing behind two guys in Arizona, future Hall of Famer Kurt Warner and former USC standout Matt Leinart.

We really don't know what he can do but he'll get plenty of action in training camp. But I don't think that either Matt Cassel or Brodie Croyle have anything to worry about this season. However, you'd have to think that Palko learned some great things from Warner and that may come in handy someday for the Chiefs.

Conner Crawford: Palko was solid in OTAs and mini camp, but remember, every player has to survive training camp, whether it's by avoiding injuries or the coach telling a guy to clean out his locker. Palko may have a shot at the third-string spot on the roster, but I won't expect him to overtake Brodie Croyle.

He should make the final roster probably by default, because it would be silly for the team only to take Cassel and Croyle into the regular season, and I don't see a player like JaMarcus Russell joining the team because he's probably the best available free agent quarterback, and that's saying something.

Michael Ash: I would imagine they're about as serious about Palko as a team can be about a third-string quarterback who they hope never comes close to taking a meaningful snap. But he looks like a lock to make the roster, unless they sign another quarterback during camp. I can't see them going into the season with only two quarterbacks, especially when one has the sort of injury history that Croyle does.

Are there any free agents out there who the Chiefs could realistically still pick up?

Nick Athan: I still think there are some legs to the rumor that Dallas Cowboys receiver Patrick Crayton becomes a Chief at some point. Now with Dez Bryant in the fold, there is talk that Roy Williams could be dealt and he has been offered to the Chiefs but they've shown more interest in Crayton.

I would NOT mind seeing the Chiefs making a run for Tampa Bay Middle Linebacker Barrett Ruud. He wants a new contract and thus far the Bucs have been unwilling to give him the dollars that he wants. I think he'd be a perfect fit for the Chiefs. Though he plays in a conventional 4-3 defense, he'd easily adapt to Crennel's system.

Conner Crawford: My wishful thinking says the Chiefs would pick up a linebacker like Adalius Thomas, Keith Bulluck or Bertrand Berry, but those guys will probably want to land with an immediate contender and are not looking for the veteran minimum on a contract.

Michael Ash: They could always pick up some warm bodies during camp, especially if injuries become an issue. But I think the ship has probably sailed on any meaningful additions. I just can't see them being interested in the type of player that would want to wait until the last second, or even miss a week or two of training camp, before making a decision on where he's going to play. They want someone who's going to show up and be gung-ho from day one.
