WPI Roundtable: Chiefs Training Camp V1

In our first round table of the season on Training camp, our three experts dive inside your hardball questions. We hit the topics from the linebackers to the offensive line.

Which undrafted free agent has been the most impressive in camp so far? Will he end up making the team?
Nick Athan: That's easy: linebacker Cory Greenwood. Right now, next to Derrick Johnson, he's the teams best cover linebacker. I'm not sure what they taught him playing in Canada, but I think this import has the goods to play a lot in nickel situations. It seems he breaks up passes or gets his nose in a play every practice.

Connor Crawford: Cory Greenwood has been really impressive throughout this entire offseason in practices. He's fast and more importantly can play nickel in some situations against the pass. Who knows? He may very well get a lot of time at linebacker this season.

Michael Ash: Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attend camp to make this judgment for myself, so I have to defer to my colleagues on this one. If they both say it's Greenwood, then he's clearly making an impression.

How many linebackers will the Chiefs carry, and who will they be?
Nick Athan: It's too early for me to really answer that question. That's not a cop out because based on practice I see some promise with this group. But I want to see them hit for real come Friday night in Atlanta so I can compare notes.

There are going to be some surprises for certain, like rookies Cory Greenwood and Cameron Sheffield. But in a pinch, I'd say nine: Mike Vrabel, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, Demorrio Williams, Corey Mays (though I'm no fan of his work at all), Andy Studebaker, Jovan Belcher, and the two rookies.

Connor Crawford: I'd say they're going to keep a bunch of them heading into the season. Those included should be the likes of Hali, Johnson, Vrabel, Studebaker, Sheffield, Mays, and Greenwood. I think the starters will likely be Hali, Johnson, Vrabel, and Mays.

Michael Ash: I'm going to say ten, just because a few guys will be good to keep around for special teams. We can pretty safely pencil in names like Hali, Vrabel, Johnson, and Studebaker. Throw in Sheffield too, since they aren't going to waive a fifth-rounder they just drafted. That's five for sure. The final decisions will probably come down to the group of Williams, Mays, Belcher, Greenwood, and Pierre Walters. Since I'm keeping ten, they all get to stay on my list – but for the record, I'd axe Williams or Walters if necessary. The Chiefs were very high on Belcher last year, Greenwood is impressing, and Mays was originally signed for his work on special teams, so the Chiefs must feel he has value there.

Morgan might fit best on another NFL roster.

What's the future look like for DaJuan Morgan? Is his Chiefs' career coming to an end?
Nick Athan: It's over. I've seen nothing out of him thus far to give me any indication he can make the roster. In fact, I expect he'll be one of the first guys cut. This area is just too deep. With rookies Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis, veterans Jon McGraw and Reshard Langford, Morgan has NO chance.

Connor Crawford: Sadly, I think Morgan's time is up in Kansas City. The team has just drafted two rookie safeties that will kick Morgan further down the depth chart behind Langford, McGraw, and Maurice Leggett. If Jarrad Page were to happen to come back to the Chiefs, he would definitely be at the bottom of the barrel, but Page, just like Morgan, is likely out of the Chiefs' plans heading into 2010.

Michael Ash: Back when he was drafted, I was pretty open about the fact that Morgan was one of my favorite picks of the 2008 class -- which is saying something, since that class included the likes of Dorsey, Flowers, and Albert. But it just doesn't appear he's been able to put things together here in K.C.

He had a strong performance in the final preseason game last year, and there was speculation that it might have saved him from getting cut back in '09. As it turned out, he ended up starting two games last year, but the Chiefs were clearly not impressed.

I didn't think Morgan played that badly, particularly compared to the performances we saw last year from Mike Brown. But after his first start, he was moved down to the third-team on the Chiefs' depth chart, which tells you what they thought of his job that day. But hey, maybe Emmitt Thomas and Romeo Crennel have seen something in him that Clancy Pendergast didn't.

If the choice is between Morgan and some corners who are converting to safety, like Leggett or Donald Washington, I'd prefer they give Morgan the spot. But if he ends up being shown the door, it won't really be a surprise.

Waters finally hit the field Monday.

Which Chiefs from 2009 are in jeopardy of losing their jobs and not making the 2010 roster?
Nick Athan: I say it's Brian Waters. He finally hit the practice field on Monday and if the injury to Darryl Harris isn't that significant, the 2009 NFL Man of the Year could be playing elsewhere. But then again I could be wrong.

Connor Crawford: It'll be interesting to see just how confident the Chiefs are in having Tony Moeaki as their go-to threat at tight end. Brad Cottam has already been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, leaving Leonard Pope as probably the number two option at tight end. That would leave Jake O'Connell on shaky ground heading into the season.

Michael Ash: I don't think there will be any big surprises. As I sort of mentioned earlier, it wouldn't be a total shock if someone like Demorrio Williams was let go, which might count as a surprise since he was a starter last year. But the 2009 Chiefs I could see going are guys like Mike Cox, DaJuan Morgan as we just discussed, and some back-of-the-roster guys on the offensive line and in the secondary.
