WPI Roundtable: Training Camp Edition - V2

Will the Chiefs add more bodies once the cuts start? Or will they stand pat. And what about the offensive line can it get it done in 2010? The Warpaint Roundtable answers all those burning questions and much more.

Can you see the Chiefs picking up some players off the street, like Adalius Thomas, Steve Justice, or Kendrick Clancy? How could they impact the team if they were signed?

Nick Athan: I can't see Thomas and I'm not sold on Justice. Clancy is someone that could help this football team, but I don't want him to take any time away from Garret Brown, the rookie from Minnesota.

I think if the Chiefs were interested in Thomas they'd have already signed him to a contract. I've heard he really doesn't want to play football, but my guess is he's just waiting for a team to overpay him, just like John Henderson did in Oakland with the Raiders.

Conor Crawford: Adalius Thomas might be a good pickup for the Chiefs to add to depth at the roster – but not as a starter, which will not be his cup of tea. If it were to miraculously happen, he would be in a familiar defensive system which he had in New England, but of course, with a less talented team.

I'm not sure if he would have a big impact on the team being that he's 33 years old and on the tail end of his career, but he could be a good mentor much like what Mike Vrabel is for a player like Derrick Johnson if he were on the roster. Again, with Vrabel already here as an aging veteran himself, Thomas might be best for another team.

Michael Ash: It was reported over a week ago that the Chiefs and a few other teams have kicked the tires on Kendrick Clancy, but he still hasn't signed anywhere. Beyond that, I don't expect any veterans to be picked up unless they're injury replacements.

Ultimately, if NFL teams thought a player on the street was capable of making a noticeable impact, then that guy wouldn't actually be on the street. That's not to say none of them can do it, but it'd be more of an unexpected fluke than something that was expected of them.

Why can't we seem to put together a good offensive line that can open up some nice holes for the running backs?

Nick Athan: Well, if you saw Jamaal Charles run last year, that patchwork line did a pretty good job. In fact, I'd say they opened up just enough space to make Charles the team's offensive star of 2009.

Charles rushed for more than 1000 yards a year ago behind a suspect line.

But this year's line is going to be OK. The only issue right now is at right tackle. I say Barry Richardson ultimately gets the nod at some point. Ryan O'Callahan has been struggling big time. In fact, in practice even the back-ups have been relatively solid in opening up some nice lanes. The problem is in pass protection, but you didn't ask about that.

Conor Crawford: Years ago, the Chiefs were spoiled with one of the best offensive lines in history, but those days are long gone. I don't think the team can put together a solid line because they aren't picking the best talent through the draft and through free agency. While the team has made an effort to bulk up at running back and wide receiver in the past two years under Haley, the team has chosen to avoid drafting linemen in the early part of the draft and has settled for scraps on the waiver wire.

Colin Brown was the first offensive lineman drafted under Haley and Pioli, and he hasn't had much of an impact on the team. Meanwhile, Jon Asamoah may be a solid player in the future, but he has yet to prove himself in a real game, not just exhibition games or in scrimmage. Drafting only two offensive linemen in the past two seasons and settling for a player like Mike Goff through free agency won't help build a solid offensive line.

They better hope that Branden Albert emerges as a solid lineman and that Brian Waters and Casey Wiegmann channel their glory days to make the Chiefs' offensive line great once again.

Michael Ash: The offensive line didn't look too good in the early stages of the Atlanta game, but they did come around. It wasn't just Jamaal Charles making something out of nothing, he appeared to have some holes to run through. I'm going to hold off making judgments about the line until we get more of a look at them.

But if it turns out they're still struggling, Conor hit the nail on the head as to why. They need to invest in some quality linemen. Goff was an aging stop gap, as is Wiegmann. O'Callahan is only here because the Patriots cut him. Chiefs fans were excited about Ryan Lilja, but we can't ignore that the Colts aren't usually in the habit of cutting good players for no reason.

Building a good offensive line starts with good players, not aging veterans and castoffs from other teams.

Who has the most to gain from the three remaining preseason games?

Nick Athan: Matt Cassel. If he can learn to manage the offense, he'll make a hero out of Charlie Weis. He's really struggled mightily at times in camp, though he made some great throws in the team's final practice on Thursday.

But the jury and the fan base still has no idea what type of quarterback he can be in Kansas City. He must play at least the first half this week and find away to get points on the board. If that happens, then I think Weis will be able to make something out of his abilities and get him ready for the season opener.

Conor Crawford: The secondary has the most to prove, being that they're entering the 2010 season with one of the most accomplished defensive coordinators in the NFL and best defensive back in Chiefs history coaching them (Romeo Crennel and Emmitt Thomas, respectively).

The Chiefs have struggled on defense for years, especially with the secondary, but drafting Eric Berry should be the turning point. Mix Berry with players like Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr, and possibly Kendrick Lewis (when he emerges as a starter), and you've got a vastly improved secondary to shut down passing games.

Michael Ash: The players still fighting for starting jobs certainly have something to gain over these final three games. Derrick Johnson, for example, has been moved to the first team ahead of Saturday's game with the Bucs. If he wants to stay there, and we know he does, he needs to go out there and earn it.

But whether or not he's a starter, Johnson will still have a job. He's going to make his money. It's the guys who will be playing in the second half of the game who really have the most to gain. These are the guys playing for a spot on the roster. Let's be honest – the Chiefs don't have the deepest pool of talent in the league. If you can't make the team here, teams like the Colts and Saints probably aren't going to be in a rush to call your agent.

Those guys might be fighting for their very NFL careers. It's hard to gain more than that.

Will we actually game plan for this next game? Or will we just play like the Bad News Bears all year?

Nick Athan: Not sure which game you were watching but the Chiefs went into the Falcons game with a game plan. They even altered their approach from the first drive to the second. And when Charles came into the game, they opened things up more.

The fact the team was throwing the ball deep not once but twice in the second half, tells me they want to win every game. With the addition of Weis and Crennel, we won't have to worry about either side sitting back and waiting to make changes from one half to the next. They'll re-do their game plan from series to series.

Conor Crawford: The Chiefs shouldn't overlook any game, even if it's a preseason game against Tampa Bay or a regular season game against the St. Louis Rams. The NFL is so unpredictable because every week can be different and as the saying goes: "any given Sunday", a team can change its destiny.

The Chiefs shouldn't get too comfortable in a week after going to the movies or heading back home from St. Joseph because the regular season is just around the corner and they need to get their act together. I expect the team to start winning, they just need to start showing that they're capable of doing it. The team won't ever win if their quarterback is on the ground the whole time and the defense is splitting open like a cracked egg.

Michael Ash: They're not going to game plan. And they shouldn't. Aside from the third game, which teams try to treat as something meaningful, a team that puts in some kind of detailed game plan for the preseason is more worried about inspiring fan confidence and creating a false impression of "Hey, look at us! We're pretty good!" than they are about preparing themselves for the season.

They could put a game plan together for the Bucs, go out there and run it against an opponent that isn't planning for them, and they might look like a solid team. Fans might get excited. A few more tickets might get sold. What's it all going to matter if they get thumped by the Chargers in the season opener? They'll be exposed as frauds, excitement will be nil, and those tickets people bought will be available on eBay in no time.

It's obviously hard for fans of a bad team to see uninspiring preseason football, as it gives off that feeling of "here we go again". But the preseason is for evaluating the roster. It's for making sure guys know their assignments and can properly execute what they're being asked to do. If the team looks like the Bad News Bears after the third game, it might be time to worry – but for now, we should just take the games for what they are.
