Next Man Up: Bullitt Lost for Season

Fourth-year safety Melvin Bullitt is out for the season after breaking a bone in his shoulder during Sunday's 31-28 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news this morning, which was confirmed in an e-mail from Bullitt's agent to the Indianapolis Star. Bullitt will be placed on the team's injured reserve list, according to the Star.

The loss of Bullitt comes at a bad time for the Colts, who are listing defensively and have already lost backup Jamie Silva for the season and starter Bob Sanders until late November or early December.

Bullitt went down while tackling Jacksonville's Mike Thomas during the first quarter of Sunday's game. He would later return to the game, but was replaced by DeJuan Morgan later in the game.

Morgan and undrafted rookie Brandon King from Purdue are the likely candidates to replace Bullitt in the lineup.

"He's learning," coach Jim Caldwell said of Morgan on Monday. "He's just getting a feel for the system overall and trying to get himself to where he's playing well and playing well consistently. It was kind of an abrupt opportunity for him to hop in there when Melvin (Bullitt) went down, but I think you'll see him work at it this week and see if we can make certain that we get him a little bit better, but he's improving."

King was inactive for Sunday's game at Jacksonville and did not practice in the week leading up to the game with a hamstring injury.

"It wasn't a pre-game decision in that regard," Caldwell said. "We had an idea of when he was going to be available to us, but I think he is coming along well enough that somewhere along the line he will be ready to go."

Caldwell said King would be a "possibility" at safety, where he was converted during the preseason after coming to the team as a cornerback. Barring a trade or free-agent pickup, however, look for Morgan in the lineup for the time being.
