Chiefs-Colts: Matchups to Watch

Get all the key matchups and the keys to victory for both the Colts and the Chiefs here, brought to you by the NFL experts at The SportsXchange!

Colts QB Peyton Manning vs. Chiefs CBs Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr: Manning loves to go after young cornerbacks. Flowers and Carr are both in their third year. It's a home game, finally, and confusion with the crowd noise is often a problem with visiting defenses.

Chiefs LT Branden Albert and RT Ryan O'Callaghan vs. Colts RDE Dwight Freeney and LDE Robert Mathis: Freeney and Mathis have been hearing all week about how they only have registered one sack between them (by Mathis) over the last two games. It's time for one or both of them to break out.

Colts TE Dallas Clark vs. Chiefs SS Eric Berry: Clark has quietly hauled in 28 passes (third on the team) and scored three touchdowns (second on the team) so far this season. Berry is a rookie safety from Tennessee.

COLTS GAME PLAN: Cut out the mistakes. Play smarter. Get in sync.

The Colts have been an up-and-down team through the first four weeks of the 2010 season. Offensively, Indianapolis has to take advantage of its scoring opportunities and hold on to the football. And the running game must continue to be somewhat productive. Move the chains. Keep drives alive. Score touchdowns, and avoid turnovers, in the red zone.

Defensively, be more consistent. Play the defense as it's designed. Put pressure on the quarterback and force mistakes. Win the turnover battle.

CHIEFS GAME PLAN: The Chiefs have one thing that appears to be a key in beating the Colts — Kansas City can run the football and they can do it with more than one back in Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles. There's no question the Chiefs hope to limit the opportunities for Peyton Manning and the Colts offense by keeping the ball themselves. That strategy only works if K.C. puts the ball into the end zone, rather than taking field goals. The offense scored six times in the first three games; they'll need more points to be the Colts.
