The Indianapolis Colts have signed undrafted free agent LB Dominique Sims out of the University of Minnesota. Contract details were not yet available.
Sims falls right in line with the Colts' focus on Big-Ten talent who also display poise, character and intelligence. Sims is four-time Academic All-American who projected a positive image and set a good example throughout his collegiate career. He also has a reputation for a tremendous work ethic that inspires respect from coaches and his peers.
He can also fit in with the Colts' current theme of having versatile players. Sims converted from safety to outside linebacker during his career at Minnesota.
Following his final game as a Golden Gopher, he said, "Being unselfish is the one word that I want to be remembered for the most."
Sims enters a muddled linebacking corps that currently consists of one solid anchor -- strongside LB David Thornton. At the weakside is Cato June who was named the starter at that position last season, but has not clearly established himself as the solution at that position.
With the Colts showing no interest in re-signing MLB Rob Morris, they appear to be poised to provide undersized but feisty Gary Brackett with the opporunity to win the starter's spot there, but that position is certainly open for grabs as well.
Sims' likely role, if he makes the team will be to provide depth and to contribute on special teams. He had a steady but unspectacular senior season -- the first year that he was able to lay sole claim to the starter's role. So it's likely that he's either a training camp only player or someone the Colts believe that they can polish over the next year or so into a regular roster player.
