ColtPower Interview with Bill Polian

ColtPower Correspondent Todd Taylor caught up with Colts President Bill Polian at the Colts Training Camp on Monday and asked him to answer a few questions for ColtPower and our fans.

On whether or not the new Field Turf in the RCA Dome had any impact on both Mike Vanderjagt and Dave Rayner missing field goals against Buffalo...

Polian: "No, it wasn't a factor at all. [Mike] Vanderjagt's miss was a high snap. As a matter of fact, the players were pretty darn happy about it [the new surface]."

On how rookie kicker Dave Rayner is doing so far with his kickoffs...

Polian: "He's doing all right. We've got to find out in the next three games whether he can do it or not, because we've got to improve in that area -- there is no question about it."

On how he thinks the defense is doing so far, especially in light of the numerous injuries...

Polian: "We haven't had our defensive starting line out there yet, and we've been playing the run really well. The linebackers are playing well, we're flying around in the secondary."

On whether or not the Colts are still checking the waiver wire for linebacker help...

Polian: "No. Brackett's been fine and if we stay healthy there (at linebacker), Pope's been fine, we'll be in good shape."

On the status of Gilbert Gardner, Dwight Freeney (who is expected to practice this week for the first time since his offseason shoulder surgery), Nick Harper and Dylan Gandy...

Polian: "The whole objective is to get them enough work to be sharp -- and hopefully we can do that in Denver and maybe a series or two against Cincinnati and then get ready for Baltimore."

On LB Gilbert Gardner and his knee injury from last Friday's practice...

Polian: "He was looking a little gimpy today, but it's not a longterm injury. I'm not sure that we'll have him for this week. But we'll have [Chris] Laskowski back this week, I think, so that will be a plus and I would expect maybe Gilbert for Denver. Barring a mishap, we probably should have everybody [Gardner, Freeney, Harper, and Gandy] back for Denver."
