The NFL announced that Colts linebacker Gary Brackett is the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance against the Ravens on Sunday night. Brackett is the first Colts linebacker to win the award since Duane Bickett back in 1993. The league's press release incorrectly identifies Tony Bennett as the last recipient at that position back in 1995. Bennett played right defensive end for the Colts when he won that award.
The league praised Brackett for his "first two-interception game along with nine tackles
and a quarterback pressure" and mentioned that Brackett "snared interceptions on the Colts' 23- and 1-yard lines to thwart scoring threats." NFL.com credits Brackett with ten tackles on the night.
Brackett beat out Pittsburgh linebacker James Farrior (6 tackles, 1 forced fumble), Kansas City rookie linebacker Derrick Johnson (9 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble), New England defensive lineman Richard Seymour (8 tackles), Miami linebacker Zach Thomas (16 tackles, including three stops on a second-quarter goal-line stand), and Buffalo safety Troy Vincent (2 interceptions).
Jacksonville kicker Josh Scobee was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week and Pittsburgh rookie running back Willie Parker was designated the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
