ColtPower has learned that offensive guard Matt Ulrich out of Northwestern has been promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster following defensive end Jonathan Welch's move to the injured reserve list.
Welch injured his anterior cruciate ligament during individual drills this week, ending his season.
Ulrich is one of just two undrafted free agents who made the Colts 53-man roster along with defensive tackle Darrell Reid (University of Minnesota) at the beginning of the year. But he was waived shortly thereafter and was added to the practice squad after the Colts' opening day win against the Ravens in September.
The Colts have not made an immediate move to backfill Ulrich's spot on the practice squad, possibly a sign that he could return there soon, after the Colts get a longer look at veteran defensive tackle Josh Williams and cornerback Von Hutchins. They both returned to practice this week after missing the first eight games while on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
The Colts have three weeks from the day they returned to practice before being forced to activate them or move them to the Injured Reserve list. Until then, they don't count as members of the 53-man roster.
