Strickland Gets a Tryout With New England

Donald Strickland has now met with seven teams while trying to find a new employer this season. The Patriots took a look at him and three others as they try to patch up their secondary.

Former Colts cornerback Donald Strickland was one of four defensive backs that tried out for the Patriots a few days ago as New England tries to patch up their porous secondary.

Strickland, who was released off of the injured reserve list after a hamstring problem on October 25th, made his first stop as a free agent in San Francisco for a visit just days after his release. ColtPower has tracked his five subsequent tryouts with other teams in our Premium Members' exclusive feature "The Buzz" over the past couple of weeks. The Patriots became the seventh team to give him consideration, and so there's been no indication that they've offered him a contract. With one more tryout, Strickland will have at least visited a fourth of the NFL's teams while trying to find a new employer.

Strickland wasn't the only former injured reserve player to get a look from the Patriots in the last few days. They are becoming so desperate for some experienced help in their secondary that they brought in three other NFL castoffs who spent time on the IR list as well.

New England took a look at former Viking Ken Irvin who was placed on IR in September, 2004 with a ruptured Achilles' tendon that required season-ending surgery. The Vikings tried to move him from cornerback to safety this season, but then released him on November 9th.

Former Jets cornerback Pete Hunter also worked out for them. He's a former 5th-round pick in the 2002 Draft by the Cowboys who won their starting cornerback job in 2004, but tore his ACL in Week Three, ending his season. The Jets acquired him for a conditional draft pick in July, but ended up releasing him in the final round of roster cuts.

The Patriots also had former Redskin Artrell Hawkins in for a tryout. Hawkins reached an injury settlement with Washington in late August after they placed him on injured reserve earlier that month with a hamstring injury.
