Vikings Will Interview Colts' Caldwell

Colts Assistant Head Coach Jim Caldwell is expected to interview for the Minnesota Vikings head coach vacancy this week.

Reports out of Minnesota are indicating that Colts Assistant Head Coach Jim Caldwell will be interviewed by the Vikings for their head coach position, possibly as early as Thursday. Caldwell is able to make the trip this week since the Colts have a bye for the first-round of the playoffs.

The Vikings are moving quickly to fill their position in hopes of nailing down their top candidate while the other seven teams with vacancies are still interviewing. On Tuesday, they met with Kansas City offensive coordinator Al Saunders and today met with Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress. Vikings defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell is also expected to be interviewed this week.

Caldwell filled in as head coach for the Colts' 15th game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks during Tony Dungy's absence due to the death of his son, James. Caldwell has experience as a head coach in the collegiate ranks, leading Wake Forest from 1993-2000. He joined Dungy's staff in Tampa Bay as the quarterbacks coach in 2001. And when Dungy moved to the Colts in 2002, Caldwell made the move as well, getting the opportunity to work with Peyton Manning as the Colts quarterbacks coach. Prior to the start of the 2005 season, Caldwell was promoted to assistant head coach.
