For 36 years, a committee of 101 sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL have selected three individuals from each conference to be honored as the offensive player, defensive player, and coach of the year. This year, the Colts became the first team ever to sweep all three awards for the AFC. They also become the first team to claim all three awards in either conference since 1983 when Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs, defensive end Dave Butz and quarterback Joe Theismann received the NFC awards.
Peyton Manning has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Year by the Committee of 101 for the third consecutive season. He's the first player or coach to achieve that feat. It's the fourth time Manning has received the award, also being honored following his second season in the NFL back in 1999. The Colts quarterback joins Dan Marino as the only other four-time award winner from the player ranks. Former head coach Dan Reeves won Coach of the Year honors five times.
Dwight Freeney earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. He has played in three Pro Bowls and was credited this year with 11 sacks and 6 forced fumbles.
Head coach Tony Dungy led the Colts to a franchise -record 14 wins, including 13 consecutive wins in 2005. He now has the best win-loss record of any NFL head coach over the last seven seasons (78-34). Dungy's Colts have won the AFC South for three consecutive years.
The committee will also be honoring three individuals from the NFC: Bears head coach Lovie Smith, Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander, and Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher.
All six individuals will receive trophies at the 36th Annual NFL 101 Awards gala. The multi-media awards show is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 2006 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel in Kansas City. The event serves as a benefit for the Chiefs Children's Fund, a foundation that distributes funds to children's charities throughout the Kansas City area.
Tickets to the event are $165 each, and can be ordered by calling (816) 920-4408 or (816) 920-4409.
