Our New England affiliate, Patriots Insider, reports that free agent OT Tom Ashworth (Patriots) has had interest from the Jets, Dolphins and Buccaneers, and Tampa Bay just submitted a new proposal to him on Thursday. But now the Texans and Titans have reportedly entered the picture as well. Both teams are trying to upgrade their offensive lines. The Dolphins are the one team in the mix who appeaer to be sliding out of the running.
Broncos TE Jeb Putzier is visiting the Texans on Monday. According
to a league source, besides the Jets and the Bengals, the Seattle Seahawks now
have interest in him as well.
Vikings WR Nate Burleson will be in Houston on Monday to meet with the Texans.
Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Texans will also visit with free agent WR Ike Hilliard (Buccaneers) and LB Sam Cowart (Vikings) sometime this week.
Per the Bengals front office, the Bengals declined to match an offer by the Texans for WR Kevin Walter. Cincinnati has been compensated Houston's 7th round selection for Walter (a restricted free agent). The Bengals now have 8 selections in next month's draft (1-7 and Houston's 7th).
According to a report in The Tennessean, Jets CB Ty Law's agent, Carl Poston, said that the Titans are one of the teams his client would be interested in playing for next season.
The Dolphins are trying to lure LB LaVar Arrington (Redskins) to Miami, but know that the Giants, Bengals, and Chargers are highly interested in him as well. As a result, they've also scheduled a visit with Julian Peterson (49ers) for Monday. Peterson met with the Seahawks last week.
The Bears plan to meet with QB Brian Griese (Bucs) this week to shore up their QB situation.
According to a league source, UFA QB Craig Nall (Packers) is close to signing with the Buffalo Bills.
Free-agent receiver Marc Boerigter (Chiefs) had a visit with Tampa Bay on Friday and is scheduled to be in Green Bay on Sunday.
WR Troy Brown (Patriots) is the focus of conflicting rumors. One published report claims Brown met with the Jets, however, a source close to the situation told Patriots Insider that Brown has not been in for a visit. Brown's agent wouldn't comment on the situation. There is also speculation that Brown might retire rather than enter his 14th NFL season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed defensive end Rodney Bailey (Seahawks), for added depth to their defensive line.
Adam Schefter at NFL.com says both the Seahawks and the Falcons have a partial deal in place that could land DE John Abraham (Jets). The Seahawks have offered the Jets their first-round pick in this year's draft (No. 31 overall) for Abraham which New York is willing to do. But the Seahawks haven't been able to reach an agreement with Abraham. Meanwhile, the Falcons and Abraham have reached an agreement on a deal, but haven't been able to work out the right trade compensation with the Jets.
Mike Sando of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that Pro Bowl UFA fullback Mack
Strong has been offered a contract by the Seahawks. The two sides have not
agreed on financial terms, but Strong has played his entire 13-year career in
Seattle. The Vikings have reportedly expressed some interest as well, but
haven't scheduled a visit.
