Draft Spotlight: OG Max Jean-Gilles

A three-year starter for the Georgia Bulldogs, offensive guard Max Jean-Gilles is a player that is high on a lot of teams' draft boards. If the Colts decide to use a first-round pick on their offensive line, this is a player they have to be considering.

Max Jean-Gilles,  OG, Georgia: 6-4, 345 pounds, 5.45-forty

NFL Comparison: Larry Allen, San Francisco 49ers

Massive player who is agile for a player of his dimensions. Has a gregarious personality. Some coaches at the combine said he never stopped talking. Started three years for the Bulldogs and played every game as a true freshman in 2002. Played left tackle his first two seasons before making the switch inside to guard. Outstanding size and good overall talent, but there are questions about his aloof attitude at times. Weight tends to fluctuate and it will be a struggle his whole career.

Jean-Gilles is a player who seems like he would be a "road-grader" with his size, but he's more of a finesse player choosing to use sound technique and angles instead of brute-strength. Runs well for a player his dimensions, but at times can be late on his pulls and traps. Rarely gets to the second-level when blocking, but if he does, the safety or linebacker is usually ridden out of the play.

Because he spent a lot of time at tackle, this is Jean-Gilles' forte. He sets up quickly, has a large wing-span and uses his hands well. Rarely will he be overpowered by bull-rushers and he never gives up on a block. He needs to sharpen his technique, but he's farther ahead in this area of his game.

Final Analysis
Scouts are torn on Jean-Gilles. They love his size, but his personality, while not a turnoff, isn't exactly what you're looking for in a tough, interior offensive lineman. Jean-Gilles has been earning early second-round grades, but there is chance he could move up into the first round if the right team sees him there and doesn't want to take the chance of him being selected by a different team.
