Jerry's Take On .... Russ Tanner

Jerry Langton continues his terrific series on the Colts' undrafted rookie free agents. In today's feature, Jerry takes a look at Russ Tanner out of Georgia, who joins a crowded field of interior line prospects in Indy.

Russ Tanner, C

Numbers: 6040/298 pounds/5.14 forty-time

The player: Considered to be the emotional leader and de facto spokesman of Georgia's vaunted offensive line and a two-time Rimington Award nominee, Tanner was on few draft lists. Although he's a smart and mature young man who gives his all on every play, some say he lacks the athleticism necessary for an NFL career. When I've watched him, he seemed to be a sound technician who had a strong rapport with his quarterback. While not explosive, he compensated with good foot movement, hand usage and an economy of movement that kept him from overextending and getting caught out.

How he fits: Tanner will get thrown into a crowded mix between the tackles and will have to show every bit of his intelligence and tenacity to make his mark. From what I've heard, he's may be more likely to have a future as a coach than as a player.
