Over the past few offseasons, Colts fans have become accustomed to the fact that the signing of any of the players selected through the NFL draft by Indianapolis rarely gets accomplished before July. The trend has been so apparent that some assume that Colts president Bill Polian kicks back, puts his heels on the desk or goes on vacation during the month of June before digging in and getting serious about contract negotiations.
Well, nothing could be further from the truth. According to one of our sources, the Colts have been making progress with some of their draft picks, laying the foundation for more detailed and serious negotiation over the next few weeks in an effort to get everyone into camp on time.
In fact, according to our source, preliminary talks have been going on for the past few weeks with at least two of the targets that should get the dominoes falling – seventh-round selection T.J. Rushing out of Stanford and sixth-rounder Antoine Bethea out of Howard University. As a result, negotiations are expected to be heating up by early next week for the pair.
Last year, the Colts were just two days away from the start of their July 28th training camp with four of their ten picks unsigned. Late in the day on the 26th, they signed fifth-round pick Tyjuan Hagler and seventh-round running back Anthony Davis, who is now in the Canadian Football League. Then the day prior to camp opening, they signed fifth-round offensive lineman Rob Hunt, who is now with Denver. Second-round pick out of Illinois, cornerback Kelvin Hayden, was the last to agree to terms later that day. Prior to the 2005 draft class, the last time the Colts had all their picks in camp on time was back in 2002, the class that included defensive end Dwight Freeney.
