Marlin Jackson is stealing time with the first-team defense away from Jason David at the right cornerback spot. It's obvious that the coaches have noticed his progress. He's become more than a passing challenger for the starting job. He's creating a real competition there.
Another guy that really stood out today is safety Dexter Reid. He has been going full-tilt, holding nothing back. He's making plays all over the field.
Colts tight end Ben Utecht told us in early June that he feels 100 percent healthy for the first time since becoming a pro -- and his performance so far in Terre Haute is reflecting it. He continues to impress with his pass-catching ability, especially on passes that you think are going to sail over his head. For the majority of both practice sessions on Friday, Raheem Brock and Darrell Reid were the starting defensive tackles.
Joseph Addai displayed some nice footwork while catching the ball at the back of the end zone today. He is also showing good acceleration, running hard between the tackles. He's going to be tough out there.
Three players who were missing from the morning session returned to the field in the afternoon -- weakside linebacker Tyjuan Hagler, quarterback Jim Sorgi and wide receiver Montiese Culton.
Defensive tackle Corey Simon, one of three interior linemen who got injured during the same drill period today, had an ice bag on his knee early, but he appeared to be upbeat and joking around with Cato June after practice today. Sweet Pea Burns had a brace on his knee and Justin Brown seemed to have a minor problem with his hamstring.
Safety Chris Laskowski had offseason sports hernia surgery, and from what we're hearing, he's having some minor problems with it. He could miss up to a week or at minimum be eased back into action with single practices after a couple of days of rest. Laskowski has been having a strong camp so far.
Marvin Harrison seemed to be really "on" during the afternoon session, making a number of eyebrow-raising catches.
Others who didn't practice Friday afternoon included the PUP players -- Bob Sanders, Tim Jennings, Eric Hill -- Montae Reagor who will likely be out at least another week, recently injured players Mike Doss, Antoine Bethea, and Vashon Pearson. Aaron Moorehead, who has been restricted to one practice a day as he recovers from offseason back surgery sat out. New to the sidelines was tight end Ben Hartsock (hamstring).
