Colts Q&A With Dylan Gandy

With last year's starting left guard, Ryan Lilja, sidelined with a knee injury, Dylan Gandy will make his third career start in Sunday's opener. Ed Thompson talked with him earlier this week and asked him to share his thoughts on a few topics...

Ed Thompson: You've had quite a training camp and preseason experience since the last time we've talked. How do you feel about it all?

Dylan Gandy: It's been really busy and a lot of fun. I definitely feel like we've all gotten a lot better -- the Colts as a team and myself as well. So it's been a good experience.

ET: Obviously it's been a tough time Ryan Lilja with his knee problem, but it's given you the opportunity to start on opening night. Is it a little bit bittersweet for you?

DG: Yeah it's very bittersweet. Ryan is one of my best friends and I care about him a lot so I hate seeing him injured. So I'm definitely praying for him and want him to get better. He told me he'd be mad at me if I wasn't out there playing my best, so that's what I'm going to do. And I'm going to look at this as a great opportunity to help out the team.

ET: What do you feel a lot more confident about in regards to your own skill level from where you were before training camp?

DG: Just a little bit more experience…the more experience you have, the better you're going to be. If you head into that experience with the mindset of trying to get better  -- and I feel that that's definitely what I've done -- that will happen. It's also fun getting to play with those guys on the first team and also getting to just hang out with everyone during training camp.

ET: They've been doing some shuffling of the depth chart on the offensive line this past week. Is that disruptive for you guys to adjust to who's coming in and who's going out, or is that just the course of business with the Colts these days?

DG: That's the course of business with everybody and it's one of those things we just can't think about. Coach Dungy always talks about controlling what you can control and worrying only about what you can control -- and that's out of our hands. So we just try to focus on getting better all the time.

ET: What do you know about the Giants defense at this point in the week? Osi Umenyiora, their Pro Bowl right defensive end will undoubtedly at times be stunting and coming your way...

DG: Their team is just full of great players. Osi deserves all the hype he gets. He's a really good player. I'm just trying to evaluate and prepare as best I can for all of them. I'm just excited to go out there and play.
